Seiko 5 Sports Honda Super Cub SRPJ49 & SRPJ75 Watches Review

In honour of one of the world’s most produced motorcycles in history, Seiko launches two limited edition Seiko 5 Sports Honda Super Cub watches under references SRPJ49 and SRPJ75. The designs embody the Super Cub in every way possible, from its silhouette on the dial, headlights and blinkers for the indexes and the Super Cub emblem printed on the sporty red translucent case back.

When you think of Japan, you might think of Mount Fuji, the pretty cherry blossom of spring, anime, mouth-watering wagyu beef, a world-recording breaking number of vending machines or maybe if you’re a motorcycle enthusiast, the Honda Super Cub. The lightweight motorcycle was first introduced in 1958 and has become Honda’s most emblematic creation still favoured by motorcycle fans worldwide. So much so, that in 2017 the manufacturer announced the total production of the series had exceeded 100 million units. In tribute to the icon, Seiko has modified its durable 5 Sports watch to revive elements of the machine. Meet the new Seiko 5 Sports Honda Super Cub SRPJ49 & SRPJ75 Limited Edition watches

The new Seiko 5 Sports Honda Super Cub SRPJ49 & SRPJ75 watches rely on much of the same core case specifications as other designs in the 5 Sports family. Both designs feature a 42.5mm diameter, a 13.4mm height and a lug-to-lug measurement of 46mm. Cases are crafted from stainless steel with a mixture of brushed and polished surfaces. Model SRPJ49 keeps its case classically bare while reference SRPJ75 elects a black coating. The cases are joined by Hardlex crystal glass, a 100m water resistance and the recognisable screw in crown at the 4 o’clock position. From the side, you can enjoy a fuel gauge engraving on the surface of the crown. The Seiko 5 Sports Honda Super Cub watches also present a unidirectional bezel with an aluminium insert. SRPJ49 pairs it’s cream and green dial with a green insert adorned with a white 60 minute scale. Meanwhile, SRPJ75 opts for a monochromatic bezel with a black aluminium insert and a grey scale.

The dial of the Seiko 5 Sports Honda Super Cub SRPJ49 & SRPJ75 Limited Edition watches is where much of the tribute to the motorcycle lies. The silhouette of the Super Cub, as seen from the front, is captured on the dial in either black and grey or green and cream. Model SRPJ49 is an easy favourite for us, the design with the green and cream aesthetic. We particularly love the headlight and blinker reference at the 11 and 1 o’clock positions coloured in orange. The rest of the markers are box-shaped which alongside with the needle hands are coated in glow in the dark Lumibrite.

When the Seiko 5 Sports Honda Super Cub SRPJ49 & SRPJ75 watches aren’t strapped to the wrist by the nylon NATO-like bands, striped in their corresponding dial colours and decorated in the logos of Hondo and Super Cub, you can enjoy a red transparent case back. The case back is printed with a myriad of logos including Seiko’s, Honda’s and Super Cub’s giving you an obstructed view of the movement within. The movement used is the same automatic winding Calibre 4R36 found within the rest of the 5 Sports series. It delivers 24 jewels, 3Hz frequency and a 41-hour power reserve.

The green and cream Seiko 5 Sports Honda Super Cub SRPJ49 watch is a limited edition of 6,000 pieces and retails at £340. You can already order this model on the Jura Watches website here. The black Honda Super Cub SRPJ75 is coming a little later in February 2023 and is a limited edition of 5,000 pieces set to retail at £380. Keep your eyes peeled for this model launching here.
