Hands-on with the 2023 Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe Watch Collection

While most other watch brands are only just discovering the popularity of bold and brilliant dial colours, Latin watchmaker Cuervo y Sobrinos has always been a seasoned expert. Their bright, colourful displays are a testament to their exotic Cuban roots. The new Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe watch collection for 2023 is no different, following in the footsteps of the original line-up launched two years ago, adding new dial hues inspired by Cuba’s coastline and a retro Milanese bracelet to the mix.

The Case

One of the charms of the original Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe collection was the container-style case that offered great wearability and comfort. While the new 2023 line-up still offers plenty of new features to the dial and straps, we’re pleased to say the case has barely changed. The robust architecture is engineered from stainless steel across the board, measuring 43mm across and 15.8mm tall. The case, while retro and dressy in style, still offers all the specs of a premium dive watch including an internal rotating bezel on the dial and a 200 metre water resistance helped by a screw in crown and dodecagonal screw-down caseback.

The external bezel is left smooth and polished and sits beside highly domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment. The new Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe watches also maintain a 2 o’clock crown (coated in black or blue depending on the model) for manipulating the internal rotating bezel and a pusher at 4 o’clock for locking and unlocking the bezel in place. The standard screw in crown for winding the mainspring and adjusting the time is positioned at 3 o’clock.

The Dials

New for the Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe watch collection is a range of dial colours inspired by different tonalities of the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico and the North Atlantic Ocean. They come in navy blue, light blue and black; the former two models offering the container case in classic stainless steel while the latter pairs its monochromatic dial with a black DLC coated case. Each dial is highlighted by bright coloured accents including two-toned diving scales with a luminous dot at 12 o’clock and Superluminova on the large Arabic numerals, indices and hands. The brand’s famous logo is used as the 12 o’clock marker and an octagonal date window replaces the 6 o’clock marker.

Reference 2860.1BL offers a gorgeous navy blue dial perfectly reminiscent of the ocean with contrasting red accents on the bezel and hands. Meanwhile reference 2860.1LB is the only model with a gradient dial, dressed in a light blue shade that darkens to black around the edges. Splashes of red also appear here on the minute and seconds hands and on the diving scale’s numerals. Finally, the contemporary Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe watch under reference 2860.3NY offers the black DLC coated case and a black dial to match with electric yellow accents on the bezel and hands.

The Movement

Fuelling the new Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe watches is the CYS 8126 automatic winding movement based on a Soprod P024. It offers hours, minutes, seconds and date function, 25 jewels, a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 38 hours. Sadly, the movement is hidden from view behind the closed case back, but instead we’re treated to a handsome decoration of a diver surrounded by a shoal of fish in relief.

The Strap

The two blue-dialled Cuervo y Sobrinos Buceador Caribe watches are available on a dark blue or lighter blue leather strap to match their display as well as a new Milanese stainless steel bracelet. The black-dialled reference is sadly not available with the bracelet but can be ordered on a comfortable black leather strap with contrasting yellow stitching to match the accents on the dial. As is usually the case with Cuervo y Sobrinos watches, these new releases are delivered in a wooden humidor cigar case.
