Swiss watchmaker Hamilton launches two new editions of their retro-inspired American Classic Pan Europ Day Date Auto watch, now available with a light green or beige sunray-finished dial.
In 2011, Hamilton, a brand under the Swatch Group umbrella, introduced their Pan Europ Chronograph, a limited edition revival of the Pan Europ Chronomatic of 1971. The latter was one of the first Hamilton watches to be made in Switzerland, following the brand’s previous residence in America, and featured the well-known Calibre 11, an automatic winding chronograph movement developed in collaboration with Breitling, Heuer and Buren. The 2011 re-edition was met with resounding success, appealing to the trend of vintage-looking watches equipped with modern technologies. And as you’d expect, Hamilton, encouraged by the Pan Europ Chronograph’s triumph, extended the collection in 2014 by introducing a non-chronograph version with a classic day and date display. This design can still be found in Hamilton’s American Classic line under reference H35405741 dressed in a contemporary livery of red, white and blue. Now adorned in more classically vintage hues, the 2023 Hamilton American Classic Pan Europ Day Date Auto watches under references H35445860 and H35435820, showcase dials and straps of light green and beige.
The cases of the new Hamilton American Classic Pan Europ Day Date Auto watches offer much of the same spec as previous re-editions. They are engineered from stainless steel with cushion-shaped architecture sized to 42mm in diameter and 11.55mm in height. There’s sapphire crystal glass on both the front and back, the back secured by four screws and offering a nice clear view of the movement inside. The front glass is flat and adorned with anti-reflective treatment for easy legibility of the dial. The cases also feature non-screw locked crowns signed off by the brand’s “H” logo and a handsome aluminium, unidirectional rotating bezel. Interestingly, Hamilton have chosen to colour the bezels of both models in a deep burgundy, which nicely compliments both the green and beige dials. The bezel has a printed 60 minute diving scale in its respective dial colour, but we don’t advise taking the Hamilton American Classic Pan Europ Day Date Auto watches too far out in the water, as the water resistance rating lies at just 50 metres.
As mentioned, the dials of the 2023 Hamilton American Classic Pan Europ Day Date Auto watches come in two retro-inspired tones. Reference H35445860 elects a sunray brushed light green dial while reference H35435820 nominates a warm beige sunray brushed display. Both dials have slim baton-shaped hands for the hours and minutes and applied indexes with glow in the dark Superluminova. There’s also a burgundy-coloured seconds hand, a black printed minutes track and two box-shaped apertures at 3 o’clock for the day and date.
Fuelling the hours, minutes, seconds, day and date functionality of the Hamilton American Classic Pan Europ Day Date Auto watches is the H30 automatic winding movement. This movement is based on the ETA C07 series, otherwise known as the Swatch Group’s famous Powermatic 80 movement. It provides an impressive 80 hour power reserve, frequency of 21,600vph and a Nivachron balance spring for anti-magnetism. Finally, the new Hamilton American Classic Pan Europ watches are delivered with a choice of two straps: a beige or light green leather band and a second burgundy or brown-dyed textile strap.
