We’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again, Louis Erard has really upped their game over the last few years. They’ve gone from a reasonably unknown traditional Swiss watchmaker to one of the most recognisable in the industry. How have they done this? They began relying on premium materials and techniques like Grand Feu and hand-guilloche, and initiated collaborations with names like Alain Silberstein, Vianney Halter and of course, Massena LAB. All of these creations are not only beautiful and innovative, but they are also incredibly accessible to the everyday watch collector.
This time last year, Louis Erard partnered with Massena LAB for the first time, a Swiss creative horological studio founded by noted watch collector and industry veteran William Massena. Together, they launched the Le Regulateur Louis Erard x Massena LAB Limited Edition which was inspired by clocks and marine chronometers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, boasting similar metallic dials in a traditional regulator layout. In a similar fashion, the new Louis Erard X Massena LAB Le Chronographe Monopoussoir harks back to classic design codes of the 1800’s but with a resolutely contemporary monopusher chronograph calibre at its core.
Like the Le Regulateur watches from last year, the new Louis Erard X Massena LAB Le Chronographe Monopoussoir watch is finished in two metallic dial colours: 2N gold-plated or rhodium-plated silver. The dial is multi-layered with the lower plate beautifully grained for a gorgeous, frosted texture while the second layer reveals a rhodium-plated outer flange and a circular, satin-finished counter at 12 o’clock for the 30 minutes chronograph counter. The contrast between the smooth finish of the totaliser and the harsh grained nature of the lower plate allows for effortless readability, assisted further by the famous blued leaf-shaped hands for the hours, minutes and central chronograph seconds. The dial is completed by black transfers for the minutes track and hour markers and the Louis Erard and Massena logos found at 6 o’clock.
The case of the Louis Erard X Massena LAB Le Chronographe Monopoussoir watch is a familiar sight, utilising all of the traditional codes of their Excellence collection. The perfectly round stainless steel case measures to 43mm wide and 15.7mm tall with brightly polished surfaces, domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on both sides and the Massena LAB signature crown at 3 o’clock. The single crown manipulates all functionality within the Louis Erard X Massena LAB Le Chronographe Monopoussoir watch including starting, stopping and resetting the chronograph. The case also warrants a 50 metre water resistant rating.
The movement responsible for running the Louis Erard X Massena LAB Le Chronographe Monopoussoir Limited Edition is the automatic monopusher chronograph Sellita SW500MPCa calibre. It promises 25 jewels, a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 48 hours. It is a élaboré grade movement so you can expect exquisite decoration displayed through the case’s exhibition case back including elegant detailing on the openworked oscillating rotor. It’s limited-edition status out of 178 pieces is also noted on the rear of the case. Completing both colourways of the Louis Erard X Massena LAB Le Chronographe Monopoussoir watch is a black grained leather strap with tone-on-tone attachment points, a blue grained calf leather lining and a polished stainless steel pin buckle.
