TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph x Indy 500 2023 Watch Review

The yearly TAG Heuer X Indy 500 watch has arrived and for 2023, the design debuts a new golden brick and black asphalt-inspired dial. The modern display of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph x Indy 500 watch then reveals all the popular design codes of the motorsport collection including a 43mm steel case, a precise Swiss quartz movement and three-row link steel bracelet.

No other watch brand has a stronger relationship with motorsport than TAG Heuer. With extensive partnerships in Formula 1, Formula E, and the World Endurance Championship, TAG Heuer’s involvement extends to the iconic Indianapolis 500 race as well. Over the years, the brand has consistently released special edition timepieces to commemorate the Indy 500 and the IndyCar series. The Indianapolis 500 race is one of the oldest automobile races in the world and is a monarch for open-wheel racing in North America. The 500-mile race is held every year at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana and is one of the most-attended single-day sporting events in history.  Since 2004, TAG Heuer has served as the Official Timekeeper of the Indianapolis 500 and together they have offered up a fantastic selection of special edition and limited edition timepieces in its honor. For 2023, we’re welcome to yet another adrenaline-filled design inspired by the racetrack.

The novelty of the new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph x Indy 500 2023 watch is the dial which for the first time comes dressed in a modern and rather elegant gold and black colour palette. On the right hand side of the dial is a warm, golden brick-like pattern inspired by the legendary Indy 500 brickyard which contrasts dramatically to the black asphalt-inspired finish on the left side. Further accents of gold are added to the chronograph functions including the 1/10th second chronograph counter, central chronograph seconds hand and 30 minutes chronograph counter hand. The rest of the dial follows suit to previous Formula 1 Chronograph models with large skeletonised hands for the hour and minutes, a small seconds dial at 3 o’clock, a date window at 4 o’clock and large racing-style Arabic numerals. The numerals and central hour and minute hands come complete with glow in the dark Superluminova.

The rest of the 2023 TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph x Indy 500 watch maintains the specifications of other Formula 1 designs in the collection. The robust case is engineered from stainless steel with fine-brushed and polished surfaces and sits on the wrist at 43mm wide. On top, a black fixed bezel showcases a white tachymeter scale for measuring the approximate speed of a vehicles over a known distance. The bezel also reveals both the TAG Heuer and Indy 500 logos in the new gold colour. The case also offers sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment, a screw in crown, screwed down case back engraved with the Indy 500 emblem and a 200 metre water resistant rating.

Housed inside the case of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph x Indy 500 watch is a classic Swiss quartz movement. It delivers three central hands for the hours, minutes and central chronograph seconds, a small seconds counter at 3 o’clock, a 1/10th second counter at 6 o’clock, a 30 minute totalizer at 9 o’clock and a date window at 4 o’clock. The watch is completed by a three-row link stainless steel bracelet with fine-brushed finishing and a folding buckle. The buckle has a double safety system and driver’s extension so it can be easily adjusted over thicker sleeves.

The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph X Indy 500 watch is delivered in a black and warm gold-lined box and can be secured for a retail price of £2,250.
