Oris Big Crown Pointer Date X Cervo Volante Watch Review

Oris reveals a new long-term partnership as part of its Change for the Better campaign with Cervo Volante, a sustainable deer leather manufacturer to deliver a trio of Oris Big Crown Pointer Date watches. The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date X Cervo Volante collection features sustainable deer leather straps and new gradient dials inspired by Alpine colours.

Every few months, Oris reminds us just how much they are doing for the environment. Through special edition runs and limited editions collections, Oris honour their Change for the Better campaign which aims to help the environment through their luxury watch manufacturer.  We’ve seen limited editions raise money for endangered sea mammals, dials made from recycled plastics from the ocean and initiates to restore coral reefs and clean up rivers. What we had yet to see however was Oris deal with sustainable leather, until now. In collaboration with Cervo Volante, Oris reveals a new line of deer hide watch straps as part of the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date X Cervo Volante collection.

Who are Cervo Volante?

According to Cervo Volante, around 15,000 red deer are hunted every year in Switzerland and their hide is left unused and wasted. With this in mind, friends Kadri Vunder Fontana, a biotechnology engineer and experienced businesswoman, and Conny Thiel-Egenter, a biologist specialising in nature protection and wildlife and habitat management, founded Cervo Volante in 2017. They decided they would take the wasted deer skin and transform it into beautiful, hard-wearing leather goods including sustainable footwear, bags and now, watch straps.

Cervo Volante goes directly to the butchers to collect the hides that would otherwise be burned and preserves them by drying or deep freezing. They use no chemicals or fertilisers during the process and employ Switzerland’s last two remaining tanneries to use 100 per cent vegetable tanning processes. Imperfections in the leather, whether it be scars or scratches, are also not discarded and instead just add extra character to the designs. Since there is no animal breeding, no factory farming and no climate impact involved, deer leather is one of the most sustainable leathers on the market today.

The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date X Cervo Volante Watch Collection

As you’d expect from all the above, the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date X Cervo Volante watches are delivered on sustainably sourced deer leather straps alongside a pouch and a card holder made of the same material. The leather has a nice, distressed look about it and feels incredibly durable, and since Cervo Volante discard no leather, some of the straps and packaging show some scars and marks from a life lived out in the Swiss forests; I’m sure for many, this will only add to the value and story of the watch. The leather straps are also embossed on the inside with the logo for Cervo Volante and come equipped with a quick change system for easy replacement.

Taking inspiration from Alpine hues, the dials of the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date X Cervo Volante watches are really beautiful. They come in blue, grey or green and have a lovely gradient effect where the shade of colour darkens as it reaches the edges of the case. The rest of the dial’s are familiar to the Oris Big Crown collection with a peripheral date track which pairs with the crescent moon-shaped central hand for indicating the date as well as vintage-style Arabic numerals and cathedral-shaped hands layered in a coating of Superluminova.

The stainless steel cases of the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date X Cervo Volante watches also follow suit to previous Big Crown iterations we have seen with a 38mm diameter and height of 12.5mm There’s also domed sapphire crystal glass on the front, an exhibition case back, knurled fixed bezel, a large knurled crown and a water resistant rating of 50 metres. Through the case back, you can admire the Swiss watch manufacturer’s hallmark red oscillating rotor which has been fitted to the Calibre 754. Based on the Sellita SW-200, the movement ensures a power reserve of 38 hours, a frequency of 28,800vph and has 26 jewels.
