Alsta Nautoscaph V Watch Review

Dressed in a unique combination of colours, the new Alsta Nautoscaph V watch marks a new generation of the Alsta Jaws watch electing saltwater-resistant bronze cases with blue or red dials and ceramic rotating bezels.

There are only a few watches in the world that we consider legendary; these are watches that have stood the test of time and have, in one way or another, completely captivated watch collectors for decades. One of these watches is the Alsta Nautoscaph, the timepiece worn by Oceanographer Matt Hooper, played by Richard Dreyfuss in the iconic 1975 movie Jaws. For several years, the Alsta Nautoscaph was almost impossible to obtain with only the original 1970’s models left on the second-hand market. This was due to Alsta shutting down production following the quartz crisis which hit during the same decade. Then in 2017, when the company was rebirthed by technology entrepreneur Angus MacFadyen, so were models like the Nautoscaph.

The Alsta Nautoscaph Superautomatic 1970 Jaws Re-Edition watch launched in 2020 will forever be one of our favourite variations of the Nautoscaph watch, honouring one of the most famous films and characters in cinema with a faithful set of specs. There’s plenty of other Alsta Nautoscaph watches on offer too including the Nautoscaph II which was the first watch manufactured by the new Alsta Watch Co. Next up is the Alsta Nautoscaph V watch which is certainly their most vibrant version of the Jaws watch to date. For the first time, the watch is engineered almost entirely from bronze and offers bright splashes of colour on the dial and bezel.

The Alsta Nautoscaph V watch comes in two variations: the Nautoscaph V Porcelana with a deep red dial and bezel and the Nautoscaph V Anacapri with a nautical blue display and bezel. Both editions are engineered from CuSn8 bronze (an alloy of 8% tin and 92% copper). It’s a material widely used in naval construction since it is saltwater resistant but when worn on the wrist, the case will develop its own unique patina as the metal reacts to the pH levels in your skin. The cases are developed with Alsta’s patented triple-lock crown mechanism to ensure a water resistance of 300 metres.

The colourful unidirectional rotating bezel is made of ceramic, in a navy blue or deep red, and features a printed 60 minute scale around its circumference for measuring elapsed dive times. To match, the Alsta Nautoscaph V watches come with a display in red or blue with copper-coloured printed Arabic numerals and minutes scale. For easy legibility, the dials are also joined by large hour  markers and sword-shaped hands liberally adorned with glow in the dark Superluminova. Like the original Nautoscaph, the Alsta Nautoscaph V also features the 999ft marking on the dial.

Dimensions-wise, the Alsta Nautoscaph V watch measures to 40mm wide and 16.2mm tall, the latter including the domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on top. The case also has a 51.3mm lug to lug width and a 20mm lug size. Powering the design is the automatic winding Seiko NH35A movement with 24 jewels and a power reserve of 42 hours. Finally, completing the Alsta Nautoscaph V watches is a handmade Italian leather strap in red or blue, closed around the wrist by a bronze pin buckle.
