Introducing the Oris Aquis Date Upcycle Watches

Oris’ long-running dive watch series delivers a new colourful, cosmic-like dial and an important environmental message with the Oris Aquis Date Upcycle collection. With centrepieces engineered from PET plastic and two stainless steel case sizes, the Swiss watch manufacturer yet again achieves their environmentally sustainable ethos.

Oris is easily one of the most dedicated luxury watch manufacturers to ocean conservation and it’s one of the many reasons we love talking about their watches. Since their “Change for the Better” campaign started in 2010, Oris have focused on creating limited and special edition timepieces in honour of preserving the world’s waterways but this past year especially, their efforts seem to have increased twofold. Just in 2021, we’ve seen the release of the Oris Aquis Dat Watt watch designed in support of the Wadden Sea, the GMT Whale Shark and the Carysfort Reef Limited Edition. Back in 2019, we also reviewed the Oris Clean Ocean watch which was designed in partnership with the Pacific Garbage Screening to help support and develop a platform that collects plastics flowing from rivers to oceans. The design included a wonderful ocean conservation-themed aesthetic inclusive of a special case back medallion crafted from colourful recycled material. For the luxury watch brand’s latest release, this same recycled material is brought centre stage into the dial.

The dials of the Oris Aquis Date Upcycle watches are engineered entirely from PET plastic elements recovered from the ocean and recycled to produce beautiful, colourful and random patterns. Because of this, no two dials are the same making each piece completely unique. The dials are encapsulated within two stainless steel case sizes, 41.5mm and 36.5mm, neither of which are limited. Instead, Oris have suggested they will keep crafting the series for as long as there’s demand. Their hope is that customers will choose the Oris Aquis Date Upcycle watch over their classic black or blue-dialled Aquis variants as a commitment to reducing the world’s ocean plastic crisis.

The rest of the Oris Aquis Date Upcycle watches share the same architecture as the rest of their best-selling Aquis series with a semi-integrated stainless steel profile, robust rotating bezel with grey ceramic insert and a decent water resistance of 300 metres. Both case sizes also deliver a screw in crown, down-turned lugs, 60 minute diving scale, a see-through mineral glass case back and domed sapphire crystal glass for protecting the dial treated with anti-reflective coating.

Despite the complexity of colours on the dials, the Oris Aquis Date Upcycle watches continue to guarantee exceptional legibility in all conditions. The modernist hands for the hours and minutes feature Superluminova inserts as does the lollipop seconds hand and the brightly polished bevelled indices. A white date window at 6 o’clock also exudes easy readability. The movement in charge of each of these complications is the familiar Oris 733 calibre automatic winding calibre based on the Sellita SW 200-1 promising a power reserve of 38 hours.

Both the 41.5mm and the 36.5mm Oris Aquis Date Upcycle watches are completed on three-link stainless steel bracelets and secured by a classic folding clasp with a diver’s extension. They are also offered in a special presentation box made from sustainable and recycled paper.
