DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler Edition Watch Review

Inspired by shipwreck treasures and fictional action heroes, the new DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler Edition watch beautifully remembers American author and experienced scuba diver Clive Cussler. The non-numbered limited edition is like no other Sub 300T watch seen before, debuting a distinctive aged stainless steel case and bracelet and a compass-decorated dial.

DOXA & Clive Cussler

Unbeknownst to some, DOXA owes part of its worldwide recognition to Clive Cussler. In his younger years, Cussler worked part time in a dive shop and wrote in his spare time on the side. Then when he secured his first publishing deal and left the store, the shop owner gifted him an orange-dialled DOXA SUB 300T watch. This robust, stainless steel diving instrument would not only become a permanent companion for him during his scuba diving adventures, but it would later inspire his most famous fictional hero.

Dirk Pitt, who appears in twenty-five of Cussler’s 85 published books, is frequently seen on deadline-driven diving missions and to assist him, he wears his own DOXA SUB 300T watch. The first time that Pitt’s DOXA is mentioned is in the second book in the series, Iceberg. The novel reads: “The depth gauge read ninety feet and the orange dial on the DOXA diving watch notified him that he had been down two minutes.” As well as being a talented writer, Clive Cussler was a shipwreck explorer, and he created the non-profit organisation, NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency) which remains dedicated to the discovery, archaeological survey and conservation of shipwreck artifacts. Now working as a permanent reminder of Cussler’s passion for adventure and discovery, the new DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler Edition watch offers an unmissable set of design details tributing the author.

The DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler Edition Watch

The most distinguishing feature of the DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler Edition watch is its case and bracelet. Measuring to 42.5mm wide and 14mm tall, the case is engineered from stainless steel with a unique aged coating. The coating gives the watch an unusual, matte-like, subtly textured finish that makes it seem as if the watch really has just been plucked from a shipwreck. The aged coating extends across the beads-of-rice bracelet, unidirectional rotating bezel and case back which alone nicely tributes Cussler with a a series of inscriptions depicting the names of shipwrecks and other historical artefacts that have been discovered by NUMA.

The rest of the DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler Edition watch’s case maintains the specs of previous SUB 300T watches. There’s a screw in crown and case back warranting a 1,200 metre water resistant rating and the dial is protected beneath sapphire crystal glass. The bezel is unidirectional and features two scales; a typical 60 minute diving scale in black and an outer no-decompression scale in red. Powering the design is the automatic winding Sellita SW200-1 movement with 26 jewels, a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 38 hours.

The dial of the DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler Edition watch is another novelty for the SUB 300T watch. It is adorned in a faux-aged tan colour and an embossed vintage compass at the centre. For easy readability, the hands and box-shaped hour markers include Superluminova inserts and are outlined in black. There’s also several red accents across the dial, matching with the red no-decompression scale on the bezel, on the seconds hand, Clive Cussler logo and on certain numbers of the date complication. The numbers for the dates 7, 15, and 31 are displayed in red to reference to the author’s birthday (15th July 1931).

Every order of the DOXA SUB 300T Clive Cussler Edition watch comes with two straps, the previously mentioned aged stainless steel beads-of-rice bracelet and a beige NATO strap with its own aged steel folding buckle. The watch will also be delivered in a special presentation box shaped like a book and while not a limited edition, it is a numbered special edition with its own exclusive serial number engraved on the side of the bezel.
