Certina DS Action Diver Titanium 38mm Watch Review

Certina DS Action Diver Titanium 38mm Watch Review

Swiss watchmaker Certina extends its DS Action Diver collection to include a new 38mm titanium model with elegant blue Superluminova hardware. Like before, the new Certina DS Action Diver Titanium watch is ISO-certified for a water resistance of 300 metres and comes powered by the brand’s legendary 80-hour Powermatic mechanical movement, all for under £900.

Certina have really been upping their game as of late. Not only are they becoming more globally available with core lines now distributed across the United States, but they have been adding new materials, upgraded movements and some stunning vintage revivals into their vast portfolio. One of our personal favourite launches from the brand recently is the Certina DS+ concept which allows you to completely customise the way your Certina watch looks, letting you to choose from an ingenious three-part design that can be swapped around at will. Certina have also been impressing us with some of their new dive watches, particular the new Certina DS Action Titanium watch which came late last year. The inaugural model moulded the lightweight material into a 43mm case with a gorgeous glossy black bezel and dial detailed with beige accents. Now following on from this is a new Certina DS Action Titanium watch but one with a smaller case of 38mm and more contemporary pastel blue-coloured hardware.

Nowadays, typical dive watches come anywhere between 42mm and 47mm so its refreshing to see one done so tastefully in a more compact 38mm diameter. Despite its ISO certified 300 metre water resistant rating, the Certina DS Action Titanium watch also maintains a slender height of only 12.20mm and a 19mm distance between the lugs. The case is engineered entirely from titanium for a lightweight finish on the wrist and a slightly darkened, brushed look compared to classic steel cases. The screw in crown at 3 o’clock is also titanium as is the unidirectional rotating bezel topped by a matte grey aluminium insert. So you can measure your dives, or simply count down a regular daily task, the bezel is adorned with a white 60 minute scale and a luminous pastel-blue pip at 12 o’clock.

Beneath the sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on one side, the dial of the Certina DS Action Titanium 38mm watch follows the same colour scheme as its bezel with a dark grey centrepiece with light blue-coloured indices and hands. The hours and minutes are indicated by large sword-shaped hands while the seconds hand features a classic lollipop tip. The hour markers vary from round and trapezoid in shape and like the hands are generously adorned in glow in the dark Superluminova. The dial is completed by a white date window at 3 o’clock, a feature we’d love to see removed from the Certina DS Action watch at some point!

Since Certina is one of the brands forming Swatch Group, we can enjoy the establishment’s famous Powermatic 80 movement. The Certina DS Action Titanium watch is fuelled by the Powermatic 80.611 calibre which not only impresses with a weekend-proof 80 hour reserve but is fitted with an anti-magnetic Nivachron hairspring. It also beats at 21,600vph and has a total of 23 jewels. The movement is kept from view behind a screw down case back bearing the famous Certina turtle, representing their DS or Double Security concept. Finally, you can order the Certina DS Action Titanium 38mm watch on either a three-row link titanium bracelet or black and blue-striped NATO strap made from #tide ocean materials.
