Bremont Jaguar C-Type Black Watch Review

British watchmaker Bremont celebrates the 70th anniversary of Jaguar’s 1953 Le Mans success with a new Bremont Jaguar C-Type Black watch with a brushed stainless steel bezel insert, reverse panda dial and a special medallion-decorated case back.

In their early years, Bremont was solely committed to their aviation heritage until 2010, when British car manufacturer Jaguar asked the luxury watch company to help them create an analogue dashboard clock for the launch of their Jaguar C-X75. Shortly after, the Bremont Jaguar watch collection was born, beginning as a range of sporty chronographs inspired by Jaguar E-Type and D-Type cars. Then last year, the Bremont Jaguar C-Type watch joined the ranks with a crisp silver dial, a black aluminium insert bezel and the first Jaguar ‘Growler’ hood badge case back. This very design returns for 2023 as the new Bremont Jaguar C-Type Black watch, which as its name suggest swaps out the traditional white dial for one of black.

Bremont Co-Founder Nick English adds: “Our relationship with Jaguar dates back to 2010 when we were asked by their Design Director at the time, British design legend Ian Callum, to make some clocks for concept cars such as the C-X75 and the XJ75. We subsequently relished the opportunity to develop a range of Jaguar watches around some of their most iconic and celebrated cars such as the E-type, D-type and now it’s lovely to be adding another C-type model into the mix.”

The Bremont Jaguar C-Type Black watch has been released in line with the 70th anniversary of Duncan Hamilton’s historic victory at the 1953 Le Mans race in which the Jaguar C-Types secured first, second, and fourth positions. Designed by the esteemed British Jaguar car designer, aerodynamicist, and artist Malcolm Sawyer, the C-type car was renowned for its sleek and sophisticated form. In the same way, the new 2023 Bremont Jaguar C-Type watch showcases its own timeless silhouette and a range of distinctive design details inspired directly by the car.

While last year’s Bremont Jaguar C-Type watch elected a steel case, black aluminium bezel and silver dial, the new 2023 edition flips things on its side, offering a 43mm stainless steel case, a matching steel bezel and a jet black metal dial. The bezel in particular is a stunning add-on, presenting the tachymeter scale on a bi-directional rotating brushed stainless steel insert. The rest of the case remains the same; it measures to 15.8mm tall and promises a 100 metre water resistant rating helped by a screw in crown at 3 o’clock engraved with the original Jaguar heritage Dunlop tyre tread and a screw down case back adorned with a decorative coin depicting the Jaguar ‘Growler’ hood badge.

The dial of the Bremont Jaguar C-Type Black watch introduces a sought-after “reverse panda” display with a smooth black display and contrasting white counters. The arrangement pays homage to the gauges found in the car counterpart, showcasing the same large white Arabic numerals and broad sword-shaped hands. You’ll find the small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock, a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock and a date window at 6 o’clock. The central hour and minute hands ensure easy readability with their blue emission Superluminova and the nearby central chronograph seconds hand draws inspiration from the needle on the C-Type tachometer with a red needle tip.

Bremont CEO Davide Cerrato talks on the Bremont Jaguar C-Type watch: “There is an intrinsic link between motorsport and high-end watchmaking. Automotive inspired timepieces date back to the early rally timers used in the 30s with wristwatches coming in in the 60s at a time when drivers really depended on them, using chronograph functionality to record lap times and pit stops. It’s been over 70 years since the release of the C-type and Bremont is thrilled to continue celebrating Jaguar’s incredible motoring heritage with the release of this new piece.”

Housed inside the Bremont Jaguar C-Type Black watch is the automatic winding Calibre BE-50AV movement. It comes equipped with 27 jewels, a Glucydur balance wheel, Anachron balance spring and Nivaflex mainspring and promises a 56 hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800vph. Completing the design is a contemporary black leather racing strap and a traditional stainless steel pin buckle.
