The concept of the integrated sports watch remains a hot topic in the industry right now. The return of the IWC Ingenieur and premium designs like the Breitling Chronomat, Maurice Lacroix Aikon and Bell & Ross BR 05 mean the luxury watch space is well and truly filled. But for those of us looking to stick below the £300 mark, there’s a lot less choice. Undoubtedly, Tissot and their PRX model have filled the gap for many in this price range, but another contender is Citizen and their sporty-chic Citizen Tsuyosa watch.
It was only this time last year that Citizen launched their inaugural line-up of Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic watches. The sporty, elegant and integrated designs were instantly adored for more than just their price point. They had beautifully brushed stainless steel surfaces, multi-faceted bracelets, automatic winding movements put on show through exhibition case backs and a bright range of colour dials. The dial options included a classic navy blue or black display alongside a stunning emerald green and unmissable bright yellow. These colours return in the new 2023 Citizen Tsuyosa watch collection including a fifth option in elegant pastel blue.
The new Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic watch collection comes with all the trimmings of last year’s line-up including a sturdy tonneau-shaped stainless steel case at 40mm wide. Most of the finishings are matte and vertically brushed other than the fixed bezel which is brightly polished. As is common with many of Citizen’s entry level watches, the crown is positioned at 4 o’clock and warrants a 50 metre water resistant rating alongside the screw down exhibition case back. Each Citizen Tsuyosa watch conforms to the integrated sports watch stereotype with a reasonably low height of 11.7mm and an integrated stainless steel bracelet with thin, rounded links and a folding buckle.
Like before, the Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic watch is available in multiple dial colours, all protected beneath sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating. The two most conventional hues are references NJ0150-56E and NJ0150-56L which come in black or navy blue respectively. Then you have reference NJ0150-56X with its slightly more daring forest green centrepiece and reference NJ0150-56Z with its brilliantly bright yellow dial. A new dial colour for the Citizen Tsuyosa watch collection is spotted on reference NJ0151-53M in a handsome pastel blue. All of the dials feature sunray-brushed finishing, slender hour and minute hands with luminous coating, applied markers and a magnified date window at 3 o’clock.
The engine inside the Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic watches is the in-house, automatic winding Calibre 8210, the very same to power last year’s Tsuyosa collection as well as many other entry-level Citizen watches. It runs at a frequency of 21,600vph and comes with 21 jewels and a standard power reserve of approximately 40 hours. As previously mentioned, you can see the movement and its gold-coloured, relatively unfinished construction through the exhibition case back.
Retailing at just £299 a piece, we have no doubt the new Citizen Tsuyosa watches are going to do extremely well.
