Hands-on with the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer ‘Crystal Trophy’ SSC909P1 Watch

Executed with more contemporary stylings, a crystal trophy-inspired dial and a two-toned bracelet, Seiko adds a new limited edition to its coveted Speedtimer series. The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer ‘Crystal Trophy’ watch found under reference SSC909P1 is described by the Japanese watch manufacturer as a “tribute to all the challengers” with its icy blue dial celebrating achievements of all kinds.

Alongside their remarkable history creating some of the world’s best diving and dress watches, Seiko have an important legacy in sports timing. In 1964, they developed a special stopwatch with an innovative “heart-shaped cam” mechanism which allowed the measurement of one-one hundredths of a second. This technology was later applied to the world’s first automatic chronograph equipped with a vertical clutch and column wheel mechanism, the Seiko Speedtimer. Late last year, Seiko revived this iconic watch in a series of Seiko Speedtimer Chronographs, each distinctively retro in design. Now in honour of their sporting heritage, Seiko launch yet another Speedtimer watch, this one resolutely more modern in execution and offering an icy blue dial inspired by the crystal trophies given to reward only the best sports, cultural and business achievements. Meet the new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer ‘Crystal Trophy’ SSC909P1 Limited Edition.

Seiko speaks on the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer ‘Crystal Trophy’ SSC909P1 watch: “We have put in the message that we want all challengers who have overcome their limits or achieved difficult goals and have completed their mission regardless of race, gender, or handicap to take a trophy of life. This is a story that can be created only by SEIKO who has a long history of sports timekeeping and PROSPEX which has always been supporting the challengers. This model is inspired by a crystal trophy widely used for rewarding sports achievements as well as cultural and business achievements since crystal is a material that represents the glow of the inner beauty. Crystal trophy symbolizes the message the SPEEDTIMER collection wants to convey: “tribute to all the challengers.”

Starting with the dial, the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer ‘Crystal Trophy’ SSC909P1 watch instantly stands out from the Speedtimer chronographs from last year with a crisp, pale blue backdrop and contrasting black chronograph counters in a tri-compax layout. The blue centre adopts sunray finishing for beautiful reflection of the light in honour of the glow of crystal trophies. Meanwhile, the black chronograph counters are kept smooth and are adorned in white printed lettering. At the centre, the classic hour and minute hands feature Lumibrite inserts and the chronograph seconds hand is adorned in white.

The case of the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer ‘Crystal Trophy’ SSC909P1 watch is also decisively contemporary with integrated lugs and a curved barrel-shaped case. Engineered from stainless steel, the case measures to 39mm in diameter and 13.3mm in height with a lug width of 20mm.  The chronograph pushers include subtle inverted detailing and pair with a knurled screw in crown and a screw down case back water resistance to 100 metres. On top, a smooth fixed bezel in black delivers a sporty tachymeter scale alongside a layer of curved scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass treated with anti-reflective coating. Securing the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer ‘Crystal Trophy’ Limited Edition to the wrist is a matching stainless steel bracelet adorned with contrasting black hard coated centre links. The bracelet closes by a three-fold clasp with push button release.

Lastly, to power the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer ‘Crystal Trophy’ SSC909P1 watch, the Japanese watch manufacturer elects their solar-powered V192 movement. It’s the very same that powers last year’s range of Speedtimer Solar Chronographs and offers a remarkable accuracy of ±15 seconds per month. The subsidiary counters include a small seconds at 9 o’clock, a 24 hour indicator at 3 o’clock and a 60 minute chronograph counter at 6 o’clock. The hand for the latter also works as a power reserve indicator. There’s also a date window positioned between 4 and 5 o’clock and classic hands for the hours, minutes and chronograph seconds at the centre.

The new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer ‘Crystal Trophy’ SSC909P1 watch is a limited edition of 10,000 pieces and is expected to be released on 1st September 2022.
