In-depth Review of the Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer

The cream of the crop – at least when it comes to smartwatches, – the Garmin MARQ 2 collection has arrived and with it comes an advanced orienteering watch for hikers: the Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer.  The design surpasses its predecessor in more ways than one, offering a new AMOLED touchscreen display, increased battery life and extra apps and features to make exploring the world even easier.

EXPLORATION FEATURES

While the MARQ 2 Athlete puts focus on its range of fitness features, the MARQ 2 Golfer on the apps to help you on the green and the MARQ 2 Aviator on its unique set of piloting features, the Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer is all about exploration. One of the new navigational tools is the Garmin SatIQ technology which works alongside the multi-band GNSS satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS and Galileo) to secure even better positioning accuracy than before. The technology is also designed to help optimise your device’s battery life while you’re in GPS mode. Another new feature is the NextFork map guide which makes the set of preloaded TopoActive Europe maps more glanceable so you can navigate trails easier and see beyond the next turn. In line with this, the TopoActive Europe maps can now also be downloaded over WiFi rather than you needing to connect the device to a computer.

The new Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer smartwatch also debuts a new jet lag advisor feature – a must have for any international explorer. The app works to help you minimise the effects of jet lag, offering you advice on light exposure, sleep and exercise. You simply enter your travel details into the Garmin Connect smartphone app and monitor your body clock as it adjusts to your new destination. On top of all these new features, the Garmin MARQ II Adventurer delivers all the popular technologies as before including ABC sensors for altimeter, barometer and compass. There’s also the ClimbPro feature so you can see real-time information on your current and upcoming climbs, including gradient, distance and elevation gain and the Expedition app which helps you save battery power when you’re planning on traveling away from a charging point for several weeks.

Another feature on the Garmin MARQ Gen 2 Adventurer watch is the Acclimation widget which displays your current elevation, acclimated elevation and correlated Pulse Ox, heart rate and respiration rate. This makes it all the easier to see how you’re holding up to the current elevation and when you may need to stop to let your body acclimatise. For when you need help navigating a route, the round-trip routing feature will provide you with suggested routes and paths that will bring you back to your starting point. Turn-by-turn navigation works great alongside this, acting as an on-the-wrist sat nav giving you directions ahead of the next turn. The Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer smartwatch also comes preloaded with 2,000 worldwide ski maps displaying the run names and difficulty ratings and more than 42,000 preloaded golf courses.

CASE, DISPLAY & STRAP

One of the biggest selling points of the new Garmin MARQ II Adventurer watch is the launch of an AMOLED touchscreen display. The 390 x 390 pixel resolution is a huge improvement on the original and it makes browsing the mass of features, especially the full-colour maps – effortless. The display is fortified within domed sapphire crystal glass and a lightweight 46mm grade 5 titanium case. The case is then joined by a special ceramic compass bezel decorated with the full 360 degree scale. There’s also a water resistance of 100 metres and a brown leather and FKM rubber hybrid strap.

FITNESS FEATURES

Despite the Garmin MARQ Gen 2 Adventurer watch setting its sights on outdoor explorers, you’ll still get all the classic fitness features of the premium Garmin Fenix series. You’ll find a wrist based heart rate monitor, Pulse Ox sensor. advanced sleep tracking, stress tracking, the Body Battery Energy monitor, preloaded sports apps, Garmin Coach and PacePro technology. A new feature is the Health Snapshot app which lets you log a two minutes session to record stats like your heart rate, Pulse Ox, respiration and stress which then generates a report based on the information. This allows you to gain a deeper understanding of your overall health as do apps like the HRV status, training readiness, running power, real time stamina and VO2 max. Other health and wellbeing apps on the Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer smartwatch include animated workouts, Visual Race Predictor, daily suggested workouts and recovery time.

BATTERY LIFE

Another huge advantage on the Garmin MARQ Adventurer 2 watch over its predecessor is the battery life. While the original MARQ promised up to 12 days in smartwatch mode, the MARQ 2 Adventurer guarantees up to 16 days in smartwatch mode. We’re also promised up to 21 days in Battery Saver Mode, up to 42 hours of battery life in GPS mode and up to 14 days in GPS Expedition mode.
