In-depth Review of TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition Smartwatch

Swiss watch manufacturer TAG Heuer extend their freshly launched Connected Calibre E4 collection with a new golfing smartwatch. Like TAG Heuer’s previous golf editions, the design is destined to assist you on the green offering a new Drive Shot Tracking, re-designed golf software and a ball marker built into the strap. Meet the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition watch…

Back in 2015, TAG Heuer gained a reputation as the first watch manufacturer to create the world’s first Swiss made smartwatch. Nicknamed the TAG Heuer Connected, the design set standards across the world for luxury smartwatch design building on the brand’s already long-standing heritage in the sporting world. Three years after its release, TAG Heuer then launched the Connected Golf Edition watch offering access to over 40,000 preloaded golf courses, a club recommendation tool, score tracker and much more. Now, just two months after the release of their next-generation Connected smartwatch, the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4, the brand have reinvented the golfing wearable with a re-designed interface, high-resolution mapping and an innovative watch strap equipped with its own ball marker. It’s time to get hands-on with the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition.

Case & Display

Before we dive into the mass of golfing smartwatch features included inside the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition watch, let’s first take a look at the exterior. Just like the other Connected Calibre E4 smartwatches, it’s clear that a full re-design has taken place with a more slender and sporty finish present. The 45mm case is engineered from lightweight titanium and is coated in a sandblasted black DLC finish for a stealthy look. At 3 o’clock, the crown boasts a large diameter for easy manipulation of the functions even while wearing thick golfing gloves.

On top, the case of the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition watch presents a black ceramic bezel highlighted in bright green and red accents. The 18 scale provides an immediate scorecard during a round with colour coded segments showing on each hole if you are above, on or below par. The bezel circles the flat sapphire crystal glass which protects the OLED display with a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels. It is purposely designed to still be crisp and visible even in strong sunlight. The TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition also delivers the same 30% increased battery life as the rest of the collection with a full day of battery with each charge and five hours when using the golf features.

Frederic Arnault, CEO of TAG Heuer says, “Our customers play golf more than any other sport, and golf has become an important pillar of the Connected watch: the new Calibre E4 is built to be a watch that wearers don’t take off when they leave the golf course.”

Ball Marker Strap

New to the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition watch is its redesigned strap buckle which now comes with a magnetic ball marker. A must-have for putting, it means seasoned golfers don’t have to carry one separately, instead you’ll always have one on hand. The marker can be pulled from the wrist with ease and reattached just the same. It is emblazoned with the famous TAG Heuer logo. A spare ball marker is also included in the case of each TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition watch alongside an additional black strap which is easily interchangeable, allowing wearers to pair the watch with different outfits and occasions.

Swing Detection

As you’d expect from TAG Heuer, the Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition watch offers a huge range of golfing features, one of these being swing detection. This function automatically detects your swing and then tracks your performance in the app, all without you have to activate the app by hand. It knows exactly when you perform a swing on the tee area and when you’re tracking the shot, all thanks to the Connected watch’s accelerometer and gyroscope. The swing tracking concludes when the watch identifies the swing to hit a second stroke. It is a huge bonus for golfers who never remember to track their first drive and captures all the data automatically without you even having to think. The only downside is that for the time being, this is limited to tracking the first shot on each hole.

Driving Range Feature

The automatic shot tracking also enhances existing features of the watch, such as the Driving Range feature, by providing the app with more data since it is activated automatically. The Driving Range feature on the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition offers a ‘heat map’ for every hole, which shows where shots landed on previous rounds. Over time, this allows golfers to view the strategies which work for them, helping them to pick the perfect club and the perfect route to each hole.

Professional golfer and TAG Heuer brand ambassador Tommy Fleetwood says, “TAG Heuer Golf Edition allows golfer of every level to improve their game. The new Drive shot tracking helps you track your most important shot and the integrated ball marker is so easy to use and store away.”

Map Technology

Another new feature for the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition watch is 3D maps technology. Using the iOS map, you can generate stunning 3D map videos which you can share with your friends once you’ve finished a round. It gives you a dramatic visualisation of the shot and shows the trajectory of the ball. It’s worth noting this feature is currently only available on iOS devices.

On top of this, there’s the same unique 2D mapping as seen on the original TAG Heuer Connected Golf watch but these have now been redesigned for even better legibility and viewing. You can still enjoy over 40,000 golf courses around the world, allowing you to track hazards and distances. There is more screen area than before and more information displayed on the screen like your club information, scores and hole numbers. Using the crown, you can move the maps up and down and as such see the layout of each hole in better detail.

New Watch Face

Available only to owners of the new TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition watch is a new watch face inspired by the sport. It comes in black with accents of the watch’s trademark green colour and is detailed with subtle accents designed to evoke the dimples of a golf ball. The new watch face perfectly pairs with the trademark strap and makes it appear as if the strap continues off screen and around your wrist. You’ll also get all the classic Connected watch faces too including the famous Carrera Skeleton face and the new Riverside’ watch face which animates a futuristic effect to show time elapsing.

Packaging

Last but not least, the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition comes with some exclusive packaging to match the elegance of the watch itself. The packaging is finished in a white soft-touch finish and includes three extra Titleist balls as well as a spare ball marker. Inside the box, there is also a metallised QR code which you can scan with your smartphone to help you pair the watch with your phone for the first time.
