Bremont Waterman Apex Limited Edition Watch Review

Following the success of the original Bremont Waterman from 2018, the new Bremont Waterman Apex is launched alongside brand ambassador and surfer Laird Hamilton and sets its sights on supporting marine research for the non-profit organisation Bimini Shark Lab.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the new Bremont Waterman Apex Limited Edition, we must first introduce you to the British watch manufacturer’s latest brand ambassador. Laird Hamilton is the epitome of a ‘waterman’ taming the mightiest waves on his surfboard and inventing crossover board sports like tow-in-surfing, stand-up paddle boarding and hydrofoil boarding. He has spent his entire life on water and with his strong spiritual connection to the ocean, he becomes the perfect sportsman to put the Bremont Waterman Apex to the test. He also shares a deep appreciation for ocean conservation and supports Bremont’s latest mission to raise funds for the Bimini Shark Lab.

Founded in 1990 by Dr Samuel Gruber, Bimini Shark Lab is a non-profit organisation based in the U.S.A and the Bahamas. Its mission remains the same, to learn and understand the biology and psychology of sharks and rays to better recognise their role in the marine ecosystem. The charity also works to educate future scientists and to improve conservation efforts and raise awareness of human impact to ensure these beautiful creatures remain a thriving species on earth. With this in mind, Bremont will be donating a percentage of all Waterman Apex watch sales to support Bimini Shark Lab and their work.

Laird Hamilton comments, “The ocean is a place of equality, the grand master, the teacher. The ocean for me is life, without it there is no life on earth. Ocean conservation starts with people caring enough to get them to participate. I want to share with people the beauty and the majesty of the ocean. My hope is that in sharing my experiences I can inspire others to have their own and in so doing get them to really care, it takes an army. In Hawaii the sharks are your aumakua which means that the spirits of your ancestors live in the sharks. They are amongst the most magnificent and magical creatures to have ever existed and we need to protect them. The education that Bimini Shark Lab can offer is invaluable, having a deeper understanding empowers us to care in the way that we need.”

Matt Smukall, President, CEO and Head of Research for Bimini Shark Lab also adds, “We’re truly honoured that Bremont is supporting Bimini Shark Lab with the launch of this special timepiece. Bremont’s contribution will provide vital aid for our ongoing oceanic research to ultimately advance the field of marine science, conservation biology and ultimately go some way to help protect our oceans legacy.”

With a mission to protect marine life, it makes perfect sense that Bremont have chosen their iconic Supermarine model to lay the foundation of the new Bremont Waterman Apex Limited Edition. The Bremont Supermarine has long been the brand’s flagship diver’s piece, paying tribute to the seaplane of the same name. Like previous Supermarine editions, the design of the new Bremont Waterman Apex ensures boundless opportunity for underwater exploration with an automatic helium escape valve and a crown protector allowing for an impressive 500 metre water resistant case. The case itself is also highly durable offering a 43mm stainless steel architecutre engineered using the brand’s famous Trip-Tick construction.

Encircling domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment is a unidirectional ratcheted bezel set with a sleek black sapphire insert. The bezel is adorned with white and blue 24 hour markings to pair with the GMT hand placed at the centre of the dial and features accents of white emission Superluminova on the marker at 12 o’clock. Completing the case of the Bremont Waterman Apex watch is a choice of two straps, the first an integrated ‘Harbour’ blue rubber strap with vertical striped grooves and a classic stainless steel pin buckle. The second is a classic three-row link stainless steel bracelet closed by a folding clasp.

The black dial of the Bremont Waterman Apex Limited Edition beautifully tributes the charity it is supporting with a subtle wave pattern at the centre detailed with several shark fins. On the smooth outer dial ring, a combination of rounded and baton-shaped applied indexes mark the hours while the large needle-ended hands for the hour and minutes share the same Superluminova inserts. Also at the centre are two additional hands, one in red for the continuous seconds and a second in a nice pastel blue to match the markings on the bezel and the strap which allows for the tracking of a second time zone. A date window is also included at 3 o’clock.

Turning the Bremont Waterman Apex watch over reveals the automatic winding movement responsible for the hours, minutes, seconds, date and GMT function. The BE-93-2AV automatic winding calibre is chronometer certified and comes equipped with a Glucydur balance wheel, Anachron balance spring and Nivaflex mainspring for improved reliability. We’re also promised 25 jewels, a power reserve of 42 hours, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a unique custom rotor finished in blue and adorned with the same wave and shark fin motif as seen on the dial.

Bremont Co-Founder Giles English ends our run down of the Bremont Apex watch by adding: “We loved working with Mark Healey to launch the original Waterman and we’re thrilled to now follow up with the Waterman Apex and to be celebrating another great Waterman. Laird embodies all that it means to be a true Waterman and constantly strives for his apex in all that he does, we’re excited to see him testing the boundaries of our watches and his sport together. Laird represents so much of what Bremont stands for: adventure, drive, determination, and innovation. We stand with Laird in passionately believing in ocean conservation and as such we’re thrilled to be supporting Bimini Shark Lab in their endeavours. We have a reputation for making incredibly tough and functional dive watches which are all tested intensively by the military and explorers alike, the Bremont Waterman Apex is no exception.”
