Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway Watch Collection Review

In tribute of a literary legend, Cuervo y Sobrinos launches a special set of limited editions inspired by Ernest Hemingway. The author was a resident of Cuba, the country which Cuervo y Sobrinos calls home, for more than 20 years and for the first time ever, Hemingway Limited has officially licenced its first range of Swiss watches, the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway.

Ambulance driver, Novel Prize winner, soldier and author, Ernest Hemingway will forever remain one of the most influential writers in American literature. Many know him for his novels like The Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bell Tolls but unknown to most is that he wrote many of his most famous works while living in Cuba. Hemingway lived in Cuba at ‘Finca Vigia’ for 20 years between 1939 and 1960. His love for the country was obvious; he spent much of his time writing on his farm and fishing aboard his boat. He was also known to have frequented the Cuervo y Sobrinos boutique in Havana. In honour of this, the Latin-based watch manufacturer has produced a new range of Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway watches in collaboration with Hemingway Limited, an organisation that manages the Ernest Hemingway© trademark, founded by Ernest’s eldest son, Jack, in 1988.

The Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway watch collection features four watches in total. Two are sold individually and are limited to 140 pieces each. An additional two-piece set is also available restricted to just 30 pieces. Belonging to the Historiador series, all four feature the same case specs including 40mm stainless steel diameters with polished surfaces, double curved sapphire crystal and the famous statement lugs. The cases also feature a screw in crown and case back water resistant to 100 metres. The latter is nicely engraved with the word ‘Hemingway’ and a large ‘H’ with a marlin as the centre line.

The two individual Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway Limited Editions come with a choice of a cream or brown dial, both set with colour-coordinated hour and minute hands adorned with Superluminova, bold Arabic numerals and the applied CyS emblem positioned at noon. The dials tribute the author with his name in contrasting red at 6 o’clock and the famous quote from Hemingway “In order to write about life, first you must live it” inscribed on the flange. These two 140 piece limited edition watches are adorned with a silver limited edition plate on the side of the case and are delivered in a humidor box with the brand name and Ernest Hemingway on the top.

Meanwhile, the 30 piece limited edition set of Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway watches validate their rarer status with 18 carat gold plaques on the side of each stainless steel case. They are also presented in a travel humidor case which comes with two additional black straps and watch rolls. The displays for these maintain the same layout and detailing as the other two but opt for a silver or black backdrop. They also elect light brown and dark brown leather straps closed by stainless steel CyS branded folding clasps.

Lastly, the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway Limited Edition watches are powered by the CyS 5121 automatic winding calibre. The movement takes it base from the well-known Sellita SW 200 calibre and offers a frequency of 28,800vph and a 38 hour power reserve. We’re also assured of an engraved oscillating rotor but the closed case back keeps that from view.
