Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel Opaline and Blue Watches Review

Earlier this year, Arnold & Son launched their celebrated Globetrotter model in 18 carat rose gold, a model we reviewed here. Now, as part of their Geneva Watch Days 2021 releases, they have relaunched the design in classic stainless steel with a choice of two handsome dial colourways: blue and white opaline. Let’s take a look at the two new Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel Opaline and Blue watches…

This isn’t the very time we’ve seen the Arnold & Son Globetrotter in stainless steel, but it is the first time the case material has been used in the design since the brand decided to include some important updates. The original Arnold & Son Globetrotter was launched in 2018 and it quite quickly became a talking point for the whole industry, delivering a visually dramatic take on world-time complication. Then, earlier this year, with the release of the Arnold & Son Globetrotter Rose Gold, the brand announced it had improved the design with mother of pearl powder on the blue lacquer used to mark the oceans, the addition of Superluminova along the shorelines and a redesigned bridge to secure the upper pivot of the rotating hemisphere. Despite being only a small selection of upgrades, they have made all the difference, particularly on the new Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel watches for 2021.

The new Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel Opaline and Blue watches retain all the elements of the rose gold model we reviewed previously but with the 45mm cases engineered from classic stainless steel. It’s a nice choice, and one that will please those working with a slightly more realistic budget. The blue Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel watch mirrors the dial of the rose gold as well just with silvered hour markers, while fresh opaline-white is entirely new shade for the collection and delivers a stunning lacquered, brushed and sunburst opaline backdrop to the hand-painted blue lacquer earth. Both dial colourways are limited to 88 pieces each.

Other than their dials, both Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel watches follow suit in the rest of their specifications. At the centre, the rich blue globe depicts the northern hemisphere positioned by a statement arch carved in stainless steel. As per this year’s updates, the globe is augmented with an iridescent pearl powder for an enchanting shine and detailed with coastlines in Superluminova to mark the shallow waters. The blue variant addresses the hours in white while the opaline model delivers the Roman numerals in blue, both indicating the local time with red arrow hands. To read the world time complication, you continue to visualise the imaginary longitude from the ruby to the central bridge to the 24 hour sapphire ring.

The movement responsible for the extraordinary three-dimensional world time function at the centre of each Arnold & Son Globetrotter Steel watch is the Maison’s in-house A&SS6022 automatic winding calibre. Its intricate construction has been entirely developed, produced, decorated, adjusted and fitted in their factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland and guarantees a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 45 hours. The movement can be watched through the exhibition case back. Both designs are also water resistant to 30 metres, fitted with tall domed sapphire crystal glass and completed by a blue alligator leather strap.
