TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph Watch Review

A TAG Heuer watch for the history books, the new TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph marks the brand’s first ever solar-powered timepiece, debuting an exclusive movement and complete with unique Superluminova markings across the bezel and dial.

This time last year, TAG Heuer announced the reimagining of the Aquaracer collection, a series which has since hosted some of the brand’s greatest releases of the last twelve months. Just a few of these included a special Aquaracer Tribute limited edition, a collectible Aquaracer Night Diver and an unmissable, orange-dialled diver’s piece. For 2022, the brand continues to extend the collection with yet two more ground-breaking designs, the first a Aquaracer 1000 Superdiver (which we already covered here), and the Swiss watch manufacturer’s first ever solar powered watch, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph which we’re getting up close with today.

The Solar Powered Dial

Solar-powered watches aren’t uncommon in the luxury watch world, not with Japanese brands like Seiko and smartwatch giants Garmin innovating their collections with the technology. But when it comes to Swiss names harnessing the power of the sun, it’s not as common as you might expect. TAG Heuer are changing that however, utilising their already well-established prowess for high-end manufacture to launch their first ever solar powered watch: the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph.

The solar-powered Calibre TH50-00 has been developed by the Manufacture of La Joux-Perret based in La Chaux-de-Fonds and is fuelled entirely by natural and artificial light through the partially transparent dial. According to TAG Heuer, the Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph watch requires only two minutes in full sunlight to provide you a full day’s worth of power and when fully charged, the watch will be self-sufficient for up to six months. If you happen to leave the watch in a drawer for several months and it stops working, you just have to expose the dial to light for ten seconds and precise timekeeping will continue. The power reserve of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph can also be extended for up to 3.5 years using the Power Save mode which is controlled by pulling the crown.

The Superluminova Bezel & Dial

As if the solar-powered technology of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph watch wasn’t enough, the Swiss manufacturer have also employed some unique visual touches to the design. The unidirectional turning bezel comes crafted from a blend of carbon and green Superluminova so in low light, while your watch takes a break from charging, it glows for a striking appearance. The combination of green swirls and grooves of forged carbon is a sight to behold; this is certainly a watch to show off to your friends. The 60 minute scale is also coated in Superluminova for those looking for effortless legibility while diving in dark waters.

The dial also comes to life at night with the black horizontally grooved centrepiece decorated in large sword-shaped hands for the hours and minutes coated in Superluminova. The applied indexes also glow in the dark, adorned with green Superluminova to match the hour hand. Meanwhile, the minutes hand and the seconds hand are complete with blue Superluminova, the latter remaining blue in colour even during the day. According to the press release for the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph watch, the Superluminova and the carbon-engineered bezel are designed to embody the colours of the aurora borealis.

Additional Features

The rest of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph watch maintains much of the same specification as last year’s Aquaracer releases including a 41mm case finished in black DLC stainless steel alongside a screw in crown and a screw in case back engraved with the image of a compass. There’s also a water resistance of 200 metres, sapphire crystal glass with double anti-reflective treatment and a simple black rubber strap fitted with a black DLC stainless steel folding buckle.

The TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph is expected to be released in October of this year at a retail price of £2,450.
