Rado HyperChrome Captain Cook Ghost Limited Edition Watch Review

The demand for vintage diving watches shows no sign of slowing down and docking the shores at just the right time is the new Rado Hyperchrome Captain Cook Ghost Limited Edition watch. This breathtaking new edition of Rado’s most famous timepiece comes dressed in a new monochromatic colour palette while still retaining all the great elements that made the original 1962 Captain Cook model a roaring success.

Inspired by British explorer, navigator and Royal Navy captain, Captain James Cook, the Rado Hyperchrome Capitan Cook watch collection has failed to let us down yet. Almost annually, we are treated to a brand new series of Captain Cook watches alongside a special limited edition piece. For 2019, the Rado HyperChrome Captain Cook Ghost Limited Edition brings back the original look from 1962 with new and improved technologies, high tech ceramic materials and a breathtaking ‘Ghost’ grey aesthetic.

The inspiration for the Rado HyperChrome Captain Cook Ghost Limited Edition watch came from the appealing shade of grey that can be found on dive watches that have been exposed to sun, salt water and perspiration over many years. The solid black bezels and dark dials on dive watches can often turn a shade of translucent grey after being worn for long periods of time, resulting in a ghostly-like appearance. Rather than leaving the watch out in the sun, Rado designed this breathtaking Captain Cook Ghost watch with an already greyed-out aesthetic for the ultimate vintage finish.

In typical Rado fashion, this Rado HyperChrome Captain Cook Ghost Limited Edition watch features a high tech ceramic bezel engineered used the brand’s famous pressing technique. The bezel, coloured in the gorgeous ghostly grey, is unidirectional and comes fitted with scratch resistant domed sapphire crystal glass that is a welcome replacement from the original acrylic used in the historic model. The case measures to a comfortable 37.3mm in size and comes crafted from stainless steel with a non-screw down crown providing a water resistance of 100 metres.

In addition to the grey bezel, a stunning grey dial marks the centre decorated with an arrow shaped hour hand, sword shaped minute hand and arrow tipped seconds hand. We were expecting to see faux aged luminous material on each of the hands and indices, but instead Rado made a sink or swim decision to keep the lume a clean white colour. Their decision has paid off, providing easy legibility during low light as the white shines bright against the dulled backdrop. Alongside the hands, the dial is decorated with the famous Rado anchor logo at 12 o’ clock which beautifully rotates, just like that of an automatic oscillating rotor, as you move your wrist.

Turn the Rado HyperChrome Captain Cook Ghost Limited Edition watch over and you will be greeted to a stunning decorated case back. The three seahorses beautifully engraved into the steel commemorate the original 1962 Captain Cook design alongside the addition of the limited edition number out of 150 pieces. Hidden beneath is the automatic winding C07.611 ETA calibre which equips the timepiece with hour, minute, seconds and date function and a healthy power reserve of 80 hours. Last but not least, to complete the grey aesthetic of this Rado HyperChrome Captain Cook watch, a grey leather NATO-style strap is fitted with a second grey fabric NATO-style strap included in the box.

The breathtaking Rado HyperChrome Captain Cook Ghost Limited Edition is currently a UK exclusive to Jura Watches. With a limited run of only 150 pieces being released at the end of the month, we highly recommend placing an order for as soon as possible.
