Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition Watch Review

Watches & Wonders 2023 is fully underway and our first day at the event has revealed something truly unexpected. Swiss watchmaker Oris, who is typically known for pushing ocean conservation and serious mechanical watchmaking, has partnered up with Disney’s The Muppets to create a special edition watch that brings pure joy to the wrist. The bright green-dialled Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch is based on the popular 39mm titanium ProPilot X Calibre 400 collection from last year but in a brilliant twist, shows a Kermit the Frog motif on the date window at 6 o’clock on the first of every month – a day Oris is calling “Kermit Day”.

Oris’ Creative Director Ken Laurent speaks on the new Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch: “Let me ask you this: what is a mechanical watch for? We talk a lot about functions in a literal sense, but really, the purpose of an Oris watch is to make people smile. That’s it. And with the ProPilot X Kermit Edition, there’s nothing else to it. Ok, yes, it’s powered by a brilliant movement and the case design is spectacular, but the function of this watch is really simple: to bring joy”.

The Oris ProPilot X Calibre 400 series from last year has been a huge success, combining the unique coin-edged bezel of their traditional ProPIlot watch and adding in taunt, angular lines and urban-esque dials in bright colours of pink, navy or grey. Fitting in rather nicely in this modern colour palette is the new Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch which suitably elects a lime green centrepiece to mimic the colour of Kermit the Frog’s skin. We have to give Oris praise here for the execution of the collaboration. Unlike so many collaborative watches, the dial of the Oris ProPilot X Kermit watch is subtle in its execution, appearing as a “conventional” green-dialled watch for 29/30 days of the month. It is only on the first day of every month that Kermit’s face appears at the date window at 6 o’clock.

The rest of the Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition’s dial follows suit to last year’s collection which swaps out the large Arabic numerals of classic Oris ProPilot watches for elongated indexes. The hands remain modern and needle-shaped, Superluminova inserts extending along the hour and minutes hand and up close, the bright green dial has a subtle grained texture to it. Powering the hours, minutes, seconds and date complication is the same movement as the previous trio, the in-house Calibre 400. It delivers an impressive 5 day, or 120 hour power reserve, alongside anti-magnetism, a frequency of 28,800vph and a total of 21 jewels. Oris continues to assure their Calibre 400 automatic winding movement has an accuracy worthy of chronometer certification of -3 to +5 seconds a day, although it hasn’t been officially rated by COSC. Finally, every Oris watch powered by their Calibre 400 series, the Oris ProPilot X Kermit watch included, carries a 10-year warranty and 10-year recommended service interval.

For the case of the Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch, you’re also looking at all the same spec as before. The 39mm case is engineered entirely from titanium so is incredibly lightweight on the wrist and is equipped with a fixed, knurled bezel, a screw down crown with guards at 3 o’clock and domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment. The case back is also screwed down, providing a 100 metre water resistance, and includes its own sapphire crystal insert for admiring the movement inside. The Oris ProPilot X Kermit watch is completed by a faceted, three-row link titanium bracelet with folding buckle.

As far as we can tell, the Oris ProPilot X Kermit watch is not limited to a specific number of pieces but is a special edition that will only be available for a limited time.
