Squale Matic 60 Atmos Dive Watch Review

A retro-reedition from small watch brand Squale, the Squale Matic 60 Atmos Dive watch is regaining new attention for all the right reasons. First founded in the 1950’s, Squale quickly became one of the world’s largest dive watch case makers producing cases for Swiss brands who didn’t have the knowledge or experience to build their own professional dive timepieces. The iconic Squale shark logo became a sign of quality and remains so on all the Squale watches to date, including the Squale Matic 60 Atmos Divers.

Since Squale began their history creating watch cases for divers, it makes sense that the Squale Matic 60 Atmos watch includes its own legendary take on the original Von-Buren case first seen on one of the brand’s most legendary 1970’s designs, the 50 Atmos Divers. Its iconic shape is a thing of beauty, showcasing fluid and ergonomic lines, downward lugs that contour comfortably to the wrist, a protruding bezel and a crown at the 4 o’clock position. Compared to the original, the dimensions of the case have increased slightly to 42.7mm in diameter or 44mm when you take into account the bezel.

There are a stunning selection of different Squale Matic 60 Atmos Dive watches to explore, each following the same specifications but differing in their dial colours, strap designs, bezel colour and case finishing. Dials are available in black, chocolate brown, navy blue and bright blue with a choice of either a polished or satin-finished stainless steel case. The black and chocolate brown dials can be paired with a classic black bezel or a two-toned black and orange option. The bright blue dial is paired with a blue and white bezel while the navy blue dial is available with a black bezel. Brown and black perforated leather straps and mesh-style stainless steel bracelets can be easily interchanged across all models.

Despite being clearly inspired by the original 50 Atmos Divers, the Squale Matic 60 Atmos Dive watch brings to life some contemporary improvements including a 600 metre water resistant case and double domed sapphire crystal glass which beautifully brings to life it’s vintage character. The dial is also improved with applied matte steel marks decorated with Superluminova for optimal legibility in low light and hours, minutes, seconds and date functions powered by the ETA 2824-2 automatic winding movement. The bezel is also neatly highlighted by a Bakelite inlay with multifaceted, handset steel markers for the ultimate retro finish.

If you’re looking for a charismatic diver’s watch with some classic old-school elements and modern construction, we highly recommend the Squale Matic 60 Atmos Dive watch collection. As a small brand, these are watches you’re unlikely to find on the wrists of your friends despite providing the same manufacturing excellence as some of the larger names. For an added bonus, these watches are surprisingly affordable retailing from only £1,290.
