The third watch designed by Oris for the Swiss air rescue organization, the new Oris Big Crown ProPilot Rega Fleet Limited Edition tributes all 21 aircraft currently deployed by the specialized organization with a total of 21 watch designs, each limited to just 100 pieces each.
The past twelve months has been a strange and hectic one for many of us, but one institution that dedicated a particularly high measure of time and effort was Rega. The Swiss Air Rescue team organised some 16,000 missions over the last year providing assistance to 11,000 people and around 140 Covid-19 patients. They do this entirely privatised as a non-profit organisation relying on 18 different helicopters and three aeroplanes for its missions. In honour of these very aircrafts and the devotion to the team themselves, Swiss watch manufacturer Oris have launched a series of 21 different limited edition Oris Big Crown ProPilot Rega Fleet watches.
From the front, the entire Oris Big Crown ProPilot Rega Fleet Limited Edition collection looks the same, and well, that’s because they are. Their diversity comes only from the decorated screw down case back which is engraved with one of the 21 different aircrafts used by Rega. The back is wonderfully decorated with an image of the aircraft in operation, it’s registration number and the watch’s limited edition status. There are 100 limited edition pieces of every case back design available, meaning in total there are 2,100 Oris Big Crown ProPilot Rega Fleet watches available to order.
Other than the case back, each Oris Big Crown ProPilot Rega Fleet Limited Edition watch follows suit to the rest using the classic Big Crown ProPilot as its starting point. The wide-set case features the characteristic knurled bezel and robust shoulders all engineered from gunmetal grey PVD stainless steel. The case sits on the wrist at 41 millimetres in diameter and the bezel ensures bi-directional functionality with a pulsometer scale and triangle marker in red. This marker is designed to indicate “the golden hour”, the critical first hour of any rescue mission.
Captured within the round case is a sleek matte black dial which ensures excellent contrast and legibility to the white Superluminova hands and Arabic numerals. An angled flange with a 24 hour scale is also adorned in white as is the tip of the seconds hand. The fourth hand at the centre is dressed entirely in black but still stands out thanks to a red triangular-shaped top and allows for the reading of a second time zone. This subtle touch of red matches up with the marker on the bezel and the red Rega logo situated above the 6 o’clock hour marker.
The red theme continues with each Oris Big Crown ProPilot Rega Fleet watch delivered on a black calfskin leather strap with a sophisticated red lining. An additional strap is also included in the limited edition packaging, this time a sporty red rubber band which like its leather counterpart is secured by a gunmetal grey folding buckle. Powering the limited editions is the Oris 798 automatic winding movement with a 42 hour power reserve, frequency of 28,800vph and 25 jewels.
