Big, bold and beautiful, Oris’ latest release sees the Swiss watch brand partner up with Coulson Aviation, the world’s leading aerial firefighting organisation. The suitably named the Oris Big Crown ProPilot Coulson watch is a limited edition of 1,000 pieces and boasts a fiery orange dial, the in-house Calibre 400 movement and a unique carbon-fibre case made using an innovative 3D printing process, something never done before in watchmaking.
Oris are one of the few luxury watch manufacturers that we can confidently say are doing everything they can to improve the planet. Since their “Change for the Better” campaign started in 2010, Oris have focused on creating limited and special edition timepieces bringing attention to endangered animals, waterways and life-saving organisations. Some of the most recent designs under this umbrella include the Oris Big Crown Wings of Hope watch and the Oris Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition. For their latest release, Oris partners with Coulson Aviation, a family-run Canadian agency that sends planes and equipment around the world to fight wildfires. The organisation is the only of its kind operating both fixed-wing aircrafts and Type 1 helicopters to put out fires on multiple continents simultaneously.
In honour of Coulson Aviation, Oris have launched the Oris Big Crown ProPilot Coulson Limited Edition which reveals their classic ProPilot watch developed with its first fiery orange dial and a carbon fibre, 3D printed case. The case specifically caught our attention as Oris explains it is the first carbon fibre watch case in the world created by a 3D printing process. The idea was developed by ETH Zurich University and sees carbon fibre and a high-grade polymer weaved together to form a super durable and lightweight material. The design is so lightweight in fact that it sits on the wrist at only 65 grams.
The Oris Big Crown ProPilot Coulson watch maintains the familiar architecture of the Big Crown ProPilot with a coin-edge bezel, a screw down crown and double-domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass. The bezel matches the new carbon fibre case in colour but is instead engineered from titanium treated to a grey PVD coating. There’s also a 100 metre water resistant rating, an exhibition case back and a new black textile strap with an orange underside to match the dial and a grey PVD folding buckle to pair with the case.
The dial is easily the Oris Big Crown ProPilot Coulson Limited Edition’s most notable trait, coloured in a brilliant fiery orange hue. It has a gorgeous gradient effect, just like real fire, showing vivid orange at the bottom which gently grows into a shade of red and dark brown at the top. Contrasting to the bold display is a set of white Arabic numerals and propeller-shaped hands for the hours and minutes. These markers are adorned with additional Superluminova for advanced legibility in low light. Meanwhile, the seconds hand is left straight and coloured in black with a nice white tip. A date window is included at 6 o’clock.
The in-house Oris Calibre 400 movement is utilised to power the Oris Big Crown ProPilot Coulson watch, boasting an anti-magnetic silicon escapement, a power reserve of 120 hours and a frequency of 28,800vph. We’re also promised 24 jewels, a chronometer-standard accuracy of -3/+5 seconds per day and a 10 year warranty. As aforementioned, you can admire the automatic winding movement through the case back including the finely brushed, open-worked oscillating rotor.
