Hands-on with the Oris Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition

Continuing its mission to clean up our world’s waters and protect the wildlife that resides there, Swiss watch manufacturer Oris launches its latest Change for the Better limited edition watch. This time, the brand collaborates with the Billion Oyster Project, a non-profit organisation working to restore one billion oysters to New York Harbour. A portion of each sale of the new Oris Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition watch will go towards helping the project.

Among the mass of luxury watch brands out there doing their part for the environment, Oris is known for contributing more than most. Whether it’s using sustainable materials or raising money for charities with rare limited edition watches, Oris have proven a clear initiative for saving our planet, particularly focusing on cleaning and protecting the ocean. For their latest collaborative venture, Oris joins forces with the Billion Oyster Project who aims to restore one billion oysters to the mouth of the Hudson river by 2035.

The role of oysters in our ecosystem is not to be underestimated. In the same way trees are to us on land, oysters are necessary to the wellbeing of millions of underwater creatures. A single adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallon of water a day and help create ecosystems for other marine life. They are also form natural storm barriers, creating friction between waves and the sea floor. New York Harbour was once a thriving area for oysters until the beginning of the 20th century, when the size and population of the city grew and as such, so did the pollution of the surrounding waters. Until 1972, with the New York Clean Water Act, sewage and waste was actively dumped into the river killing almost the entire oyster population.

The Billion Oyster Project was created in 2014 by Murray Fisher and Pete Malinowski to help recover the lost population of oysters that once thrived in the Hudson river. Already, the project has seen 11,000 volunteers, 8,000 students, 100 schools and more than 50 restaurant partners come together and introduce 75 million juvenile oysters to 18 restoration sites covering 14.5 acres of New York Harbour. The oyster population is now self-sustaining. Also joining the fight is Oris, who have created the Oris Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition watch to help raise funds to keep the project growing.

So, onto the Oris Aquis New York Harbour watch itself, what can we expect? As always, Oris wonderfully honours the charity they are supporting with several tropes included in the design. The dial of the limited edition reflects the colours of the harbour’s water and the iridescence of oyster shells with a stunning green mother of pearl backdrop. Meanwhile, the case back of the watch is engraved with three oyster shells alongside its limited edition status out of 2,000 pieces.

The rest of the Oris Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition watch maintains all the specifications of previous Aquis models including a 41.5mm stainless steel case equipped with a unidirectional rotating bezel. For a change, the bezel doesn’t include a coloured ceramic insert but is also crafted from steel and offers the 60 minute scale in relief. The case also features a screw in crown, screw down case back and water resistance of 300 metres.

Laid upon the green mother of pearl display is a combination of applied indexes, baton hands and a lollipop-tipped seconds hand, all adorned with Superluminova inserts. Legibility continues to be ensured thanks to the anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass placed above. Powering the hours, minutes, seconds and date functions of the Oris Aquis New York Harbour is the well-known Oris 733 automatic winding calibre. It is based on a Sellita SW 200-1, beats at 28,800vph and has a 38-hour power reserve.

Completing the Oris Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition watch is a choice of two straps, both included in the box alongside a strap changing tool so you can easily swap around the straps depending on your mood or the occasion. The  first is a sporty seafoam green rubber strap with pairs in nicely with the dial. The second is a classic three-row link stainless steel bracelet completed by a folding clasp with divers extension.
