Louis Erard Excellence Petite Seconde Terracotta Watches Review

Swiss watch manufacturer Louis Erard expands their flagship Excellence collection once again with the launch of the Louis Erard Excellence Petite Seconde Terracotta watches. One in 42mm and a second 39mm reference, the 100-piece each limited editions showcase a stunning new salmon-hue dial inspired by the warmth and softness of the Jura Mountains, the home of Louis Erard watches.

Over the past two years, we’ve seen a real change in pace for the Louis Erard brand. Alongside their affordable classics, they have introduced several special editions including collaborations with Vianney Halter and Albert Silberstein and rare dial designs like the Excellence Grand Feu and Excellence Guilloche Main. Late last year, they also launched the Louis Erard Excellence Régulateur Aventurine, Lapis Lazuli and Malachite watches, a trio of limited editions harnessing natural materials and gemstones for their dials. Similarly in line with that is the new Louis Erard Excellence Petite Seconde Terracotta watches which again bring attention to the natural materials of earth, this time stone, with a terracotta-coloured dial.

There’s something undeniably beautiful and yet almost eccentric about a salmon-pink dial like this. You don’t see them all that often in the luxury watch world, and when you do, they’re usually reserved to a limited edition. The same can be said for the Louis Erard Excellence Petite Seconde Terracotta watches which are limited to 100 pieces each. The dial of the new release reminds us a lot of timepieces from the 1950’s with a warm, earthy finish across several levels. The centre of the dial subtly drops down to the outer hour ring, both offering different finishings in matte or satin-finished. Contrasting most considerably to the fine grain of the centre is the small seconds at 6 o’clock which is treated to a snail pattern. The dial is finalised by anthracite transfers, glossy anthracite indexes and matching fir tree hands.

As we mentioned, there are two Louis Erard Excellence Petite Seconde Terracotta watches to choose from. The 42mm version follows in the footsteps of many previous Excellence reference with a lug width of 22mm and a thickness of 12.25mm. It also delivers domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment, an exhibition case back, the signature fir tree crown and a water resistant of 50 metres. For the second design, the Excellence Petite Seconde Terracotta sits much more compact on the wrist at 39mm in diameter assisting in its classical aesthetic. The 39mm case ensures the same glass, lug width, case height, case back and water resistance as its larger counterpart. Completing both cases is a dark brown Baranil calfskin leather strap and a polished stainless steel pin buckle.

Powering both Louis Erard Excellence Petite Seconde Terracotta watches is the Sellita SW261-1 automatic winding movement. Alongside the obvious hours, minutes and small seconds complication, the Swiss made calibre provides a power reserve of 38 hours and runs at a frequency of 28,800vph. Since each Excellence Petite Seconde Terracotta watch comes with an exhibition case back, you can admire the movement in person including the elaboré grade finishing and the openwork oscillating rotor.
