Longines Spirit Titanium Watch Collection Review

The Spirit collection by Longines expands yet again with a lightweight and hard-wearing series of designs nicknamed the Longines Spirit Titanium…

When the Longines Spirit collection was first released back in the summer of 2020, it was a surprising yet delightful addition to the brand’s already hefty portfolio of pilot’s watches. The designs are idealistically classic combining old-school design cues with contemporary materials and technology, all paying homage to aviation pioneers like Amelia Earhart, Howard Hughes, Elinor Smith and Paul-Emilie Victor. Over the last twelve months, the collection has expanded to include classic time and date only references, chronograph complication and a wide variety of dial and strap colourways including a stunning duo of green-dialled Longines Spirit watches. All were engineered from stainless steel. Now, the Swiss watch manufacturer evolves the case of the Spirit with a lighter and more durable material, titanium.

The material in mind is Grade 5 titanium, otherwise known as titanium-aluminium-vanadium alloy. It is incredibly lightweight and so sits extremely comfortably on the wrist and also has a significantly greater durability to knocks and scratches compared to stainless steel. The appearance of titanium also differs from the gleaming polished finish of most steel watches, offering a slighter darker and more matte finish allowing the new Longines Spirit Titanium watches a further contemporary look.

There are four references available for the Longines Spirit Titanium, two in 40mm and two in 42mm. Each size is then available on a satin-polished finished titanium bracelet or an anthracite woven nylon strap. The bracelet is secured by a triple safety folding buckle while the textile strap retains a classic pin buckle. Both buckles are engineered from titanium with the straps equipped with an interchangeable system so that you can change the bracelet or the textile band without the need for tools. The case of the Longines Spirit Titanium also features a matching titanium screw down case back and titanium screw in crown assisting in a water resistant rating of 100 metres.

The Longines Spirit Titanium watches not only differ in their case material but also deliver a new dial colour. It’s arguably the most retro display yet in their Spirit collection featuring a gorgeous, sandblasted anthracite backdrop and satin black flange. The dark hues of the dial offer a subtle gleam while the hands, numerals, hourglass logo and stars motif are subdued with hints of mellow gold for a sophisticated, vintage-inspired finish. The hands and numerals are also treated to a helping of “Blue Line” Superluminova for easy legibility in low light. The Longines Spirit Titanium watches have also surprised with their lack of a date window, a first for the Spirit series.

Working below the dial is a chronometer certified movement, something marked by the five star signature at the bottom end of the dial. The movement is the Longines L888.4 automatic winding calibre based on the ETA A31.L11. As well as ticking all the boxes from the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute, the movement provides hours, minutes and seconds, a power reserve of 72 hours and a frequency of 25,200vph. Each Longines Spirit Titanium watch is also equipped with a silicon balance spring providing additional protection against magnetic fields.
