Introducing the Seiko Astron GPS Solar Super Nova Green SSH127J1 Limited Edition

Seiko adds a new solar-powered, time zone-hopping Astron watch to their 2023 collection with a modern black coated titanium case and an explosive nova-inspired green dial. Let’s take a look at the new Seiko Astron GPS Solar Super Nova Green watch under reference SSH127J1

Solar-powered watches are growing in the luxury watch space. You’ve got the likes of TAG Heuer entering the industry with innovative designs like their Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph watch and German watchmaker Junghans combining their Bauhaus-stylings with a range of solar-powered radio-controlled movements. Then you have Seiko. An affordable watch manufacturer who has been creating solar-powered timepieces since the 1970’s. The Seiko Astron watch, which first launched in 2012, is undoubtedly one of the Japanese brand’s most ground-breaking designs, allowing you to access precise time anywhere on the planet – but more about that later. For 2023, Seiko combines their GPS Solar technology with a new colourway of black and green.

Most of the spec for the new Seiko Astron GPS Solar Super Nova Green watch is what we’ve seen before. The case measures to 43.1mm wide and 12.2mm thick with the top sapphire crystal and the bottom closed for a 100 metre water resistant rating. The case is traditionally engineered from titanium for a lightweight finish on the wrist and sports a black super-hard coating for additional scratch resistance. The bezel stays fixed and it’s limited edition status out of 1,200 pieces is presented on the case back.

New for the Seiko Astron GPS Solar Super Nova Green SSH127J1 watch is the dial. Pairing nicely with the modernity of the black-coated case is a muted, blueish-green sunburst gradient display inspired by exploding supernovas. The sunburst detailing on the dial is not like your regular sunburst finishing; the lines which extend out from the middle are much prominent adding to the gradient effect which darkens in colour at the edges. The dial also presents some stunning rose-gold coloured accents on the two subsidiary dials at 3 and 9 o’clock. It’s a really handsome combination of colours. The dial also boasts Lumibrite coating on the central hands and indexes while a date window is added between the 4 and 5 o’clock marker.

Powering the Seiko Astron GPS Solar Super Nova Green SSH127J1 watch is Seiko’s slimmest and most advanced GPS Solar movement yet: the Calibre 5X53. This movement was launched last year as part of the 10-year anniversary of the Seiko Astron GPS Solar watch. It provides a dual-time function, a perpetual calendar to February 28, 2100, a power reserve display, reception result display function, satellite acquisition status display function, time transfer function and a world time function for presenting the time in 39 different time zones. The movement works by connecting to the GPS network up to twice a day to maintain its precision anywhere in the world. It will automatically adjust to Daylight Saving Time, and if you were to cross time zones, you simply press a single button to move the independently driven hour, minute and seconds hand to the correct local time. It is also powered entirely by natural and artificial light
