Introducing Seiko 5 Sports SKX ‘Skeleton Style’ Watches

It was only days ago that Seiko launched a very special duo of skeletonised Seiko 5 Sports watches in collaboration with Japanese artist Kosuke Kawamura. The two limited editions were undeniably impressive, reviving aesthetics of the 1970’s Seiko Time Sonar and combining them with their sporty SKX case. In follow up, the Japanese watch manufacturer launches another pair of skeleton watches, these ones permanent and opting for a single colour across their tinted dials. Meet the new Seiko 5 Sports SKX ‘Skeleton Style’ watches

When the Seiko 5 Sports watch collection was launched back in 2019, avid Seiko collectors became worried that their beloved series of SKX dive watches would be discontinued – and sure enough, they were right. The Seiko 5 Sports watch offered much of the same functionality but with fewer dive capabilities. Nevertheless, here we are three years later and it’s safe to say the Seiko 5 Sports collection has been welcomed with open arms. We’ve seen several themed series like the Flieger, Field, Camo and Stealth editions making up some of our own personal favourites alongside a number of limited edition collaborations. More recently, the Seiko 5 Sports family honoured its SKX predecessor with the launch of the 5 Sports GMT SKX Re-Interpretation watches which enjoyed additional improvements to the case and bracelet inspired by the diver’s watch. Those same improvements are also applied to the new Seiko 5 Sports SKX ‘Skeleton Style’ watches which bring together elements of the 5 Sports, SKX and Time Solar in one design.

Like the Seiko 5 Sports Kosuke Kawamura Skeleton Limited Editions launched last week, the new 5 Sports SKX ‘Skeleton Style’ watches present a centrepiece skeletonised dial with exposed day and date discs housed beneath coloured glass. Currently there are two Seiko 5 Sports SKX ‘Skeleton Style’ watches to choose from, reference SRPJ45K1 which opts for a gorgeous shade of blue for its glass and reference SRPJ47K1 which is adorned in a dark orange, almost brown hue. The colour of the glass is also replicated on elements of the bezel.

The dials of the Seiko 5 Sports SKX ‘Skeleton Style’ watches add additional elements of colour on their seconds hands. Reference SRPJ45K1 nominates a bright red-orange seconds hand for easy legibility against its blue backdrop while reference SRPJ47K1 opts for sunshine yellow. Other than that, both watches are exactly the same, beautifully exposing the date and day disc, the day disc in particular standing out for revealing both the English and Japanese translations. There’s also rounded applied indexes and large pointed hands for the hours and minutes treated to glow in the dark Lumibrite inserts.

As for the cases, the Seiko 5 Sports SKX ‘Skeleton Style’ watches replicate those of past releases with a 42.5mm stainless steel architecture adorned with integrated lugs, Hardlex crystal glass and a unidirectional 60 minute scale bezel. The iconic 4 o’clock positioned crown is screw down as is the case back, both assisting in a water resistance of 100 metres. Reference SRPJ45K1 and SRPJ47K1 also both elect a three-row link stainless steel bracelet and a three-fold clasp with push button release.

Finalising the Seiko 5 Sports SKX ‘Skeleton Style’ watches is the same automatic winding movement responsible for the rest of the 5 Sports collection. The Calibre 4R36 movement has been created in-house by the Japanese brand and exerts a power reserve of 41 hours and a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. There’s also a total of 24 jewels.
