Seiko 5 Sports Flieger Watch Collection Review

The Seiko 5 Sports watch collection expands once again to introduce a new military style inspired by pilot and navigation watches. Suitably named the Seiko 5 Sports Flieger, the collection features six new models each promising clear and easy to read dials, robust cases and some with bomber jacket-inspired nylon straps.

First launched in 2019, the Seiko 5 Sports collection revived a historic line originally found in Seiko’s portfolio back in 1963. Nicknamed the Seiko Sportmatic 5, the design was both Japan’s and Seiko’s first automatic day date watch and was widely celebrated for its reliability and toughness. In honour of its predecessor, the modern-day Seiko 5 Sports promises to deliver five key features in every design. These include an automatic movement, a day and date display, a decent water resistance, a recessed crown at 4 o’ clock and a case built especially for durability. The Seiko 5 Sports watch collection launched in 2019 delivered exactly that, as have all further additions to the collection including the 5 Sports Field series, a collection with a distinct outdoorsy aesthetic, and now the Seiko 5 Sports Flieger watch collection with a resolutely aviator-inspired design.

Before we go into detail about where each of the six new Seiko 5 Sports Flieger watches differ, let’s first take a look at what they have in common. Each design features a 39.3mm case with a 13.3mm thickness, 48mm length and a lug width of 20mm. All cases are engineered from stainless steel, four with hard coating for a smooth classic steel finish and two with black hard coating. The cases also promise screw in crowns at 3 o’clock, a screw down case backs, curved Hardlex crystal glass and water resistant ratings of 100 metres.

The Seiko 5 Sports Flieger watches all differ in their dial colourways but their layouts are all the same with large pipette-shaped hands for the hours and minutes, a slender and coloured tipped seconds hand and a large triangle marker at 12 o’clock. The northern marker and the hands come finished in glow in the dark Lumibrite. The dial’s also feature luminous dots around the circumference for every ten minute interval, a 60 minute track on the outer circumference and a 12 hour scale on the inner flange. There’s also the promised day and date window at 3 o’clock.

Powering each of the Seiko 5 Sports Flieger watches is the 4R35 automatic winding movement with manual winding capacity. This is the same calibre that has powered all models in the 5 Sports collection which offers a power reserve of 41 hours, a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and a total of 24 jewels.

First up in the Seiko 5 Sports Flieger line up is reference SRPH33K1, easily the most recognisable design in the entire collection. This model features a black coated case, a matching black dial and a black nylon strap. Contrasting to all the black is bright orange accents on the dial including orange hands and numerals as well as orange lining on the band. The second black cased watch is reference SRPH25K1 which opts for a black fine link bracelet and a classic black dial with white numerals and markers. Similarly, model SRPH23K1 offers the same monochrome dial and mesh bracelet but with a bare steel finish.

The next piece in the Seiko 5 Sports Flieger watch collection is reference SRPH27K1 opting for a classic steel case, deep navy grained dial, cream Lumibrite hands and indexes and a traditional three-row link stainless steel bracelet. Then we have model SRPH31K1 offering the same navy face and steel case but with white and orange dial features and a navy nylon strap with contrasting orange lining. The sixth and final watch in the Seiko 5 Sports Flieger family is reference SRPH29K1 which elects a khaki-green grained dial with white and orange hardware and a matching green nylon strap with orange lining.
