As part of their Watches & Wonders 2023 showcase, TAG Heuer has launched yet another special edition timepiece in collaboration with Gulf Oil International. The 2023 TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph X Golf watch displays the iconic stripes on a navy blue dial along with matching blue chronograph counters, a 43mm case, robust metal bracelet and a Swiss made quartz movement.
A Brief History of TAG Heuer & Gulf
TAG Heuer and Gulf marked the beginning of their official partnership back in 2018, but truthfully, their relationship extends back much further than this. Famously, actor Steve McQueen brought the two together when he starred in the 1971 film “Le Mans.” The actor wore a well-known TAG Heuer Monaco on his wrist while driving a Porsche 917K emblazoned with the Gulf logo. From that moment on, the three of them were forever intertwined.
TAG Heuer and Gulf’s first official collaboration came almost half a century later at Baselworld 2018. Here they launched a special edition Monaco watch in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Gulf’s first victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The design paired the watch’s iconic square-shaped case with the Gulf colours on the dial. Since then, the duo has launched several special editions to represent their kinship and shares values, offering the iconic blue and orange stripes, the driving livery colours of Gulf cars, on a number of TAG Heuer models. The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph X Golf 2023 Watch
The new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph X Golf watch for 2023 is much like the original model launched between the Swiss watchmaker and global oil company back in 2018. There’s the same 43mm stainless steel case, quartz movement and striped dial but you’ll spot some subtle differences on the chronograph counters, hour and minutes track, bezel, crown and chronograph pushers. The distinctive sporty personality is still there though. The 43mm stainless steel case has an electric blue aluminium bezel with notched detailing and a white printed tachymeter scale. The Gulf logo is also included at the 1 o’clock position.
The case of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph X Golf watch is neatly fine-brushed and polished, matching with its three-row link stainless steel bracelet and double-folding security clasp. The screw in crown at 3 o’clock is slightly knurled and like the chronograph pushers is left bare in stainless steel, contrasting to the 2018 edition which had these coated in black PVD. The 2 o’clock pusher also debuts a handsome orange rubber ring to tie in with the Gulf-inspired colourway. There’s also a screw down case back engraved with the Gulf logo, sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating and a 200 metre water resistant rating.
Drawing the most attention is the dial. The 2023 TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph X Golf watch offers a blue sunray-finished display adorned with the famous light blue and orange stripes on the right hand side, which also trail off into elements of the navy blue subsidiary dials and onto the minutes track. The small seconds sits at 3 o’clock while the chronograph counters for the 1/10th second and 30 minutes sit at 6 and 9 o’clock. The dial also presents the familiar Formula 1 Arabic numerals and two central, partially skeletonised sword-shaped hands for the hours and minutes, all generously adorned in the glow in the dark Superluminova. The central chronograph seconds hand is adorned in orange and a date window sits at the 4 o’clock position. Powering all of this is a traditional Swiss-made quartz movement.
The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph X Golf watch is a special edition, so although not limited to a specific number of pieces will only be available to order for a limited time.
