Earlier this year, Japanese watchmaker Seiko added two new designs to their 5 Sports Flieger line. The Seiko 5 Sport Flieger Suit Style watches swap out the previous textile straps for bands of leather and they’re also impressively compact with a case size of only 36mm. Let’s take a look at these military-inspired watches in more detail…
We’re big fans of the Seiko 5 Sports collection. They are perfect entry-level watches for those just getting into the luxury watch industry, retailing between £200 and £300, and despite their affordability, they don’t lack on the specification front. They house Seiko’s own in-house automatic winding movements and offer 100 metre water resistant cases, day and date displays and robust cases of stainless steel. There’s certainly not shortage of designs to choose from either. Since it was launched in 2019, the Seiko 5 Sports collection has evolved to include designs like the 5 Sports Field which offers a distinctive outdoorsy aesthetic, the 5 Sports Stealth all dressed in black and the 5 Sports SKX GMT which temps the wrists of globetrotters. There’s even been some Seiko 5 Sports Ladies watches added to line-up recently for those with smaller wrists. Then you have the Seiko 5 Sports Flieger watch collection which honours the original layout of WWII Flieger watches with large minute numerals going from 5 to 55.
The original line of Seiko 5 Sports Flieger watches launched just last year and compared to the new duo of 5 Sports Flieger Suit Style watches, they came with nylon straps and larger 39.9mm stainless steel cases. The new additions on the other hand, opt for dressier leather straps and a smaller case size of 36mm matching with the 36mm-sized 5 Sports Midfield watches from earlier this year. Other than that, all the specification appears the same. The cases are engineered from stainless steel with curved Hardlex crystal glass, a screw in 3 o’clock crown, screw down case backs and a 100 metre water resistant rating. The 36mm diameter is also joined by a relatively slim height of 12.52mm and a lug width of 18mm.
There are currently two 5 Sports Flieger Suit Style watches to choose from. The first is the Seiko 5 Sports ‘Champagne Flieger’ Suit Style watch under reference SRPJ87K1 which pairs a handsome, sunray-finished champagne-coloured dial with beige Lumibrite on the hands and indexes and black outlines for the hands and printed numerals. It is also completed by a dark brown, almost black calfskin leather strap. Meanwhile the Seiko 5 ‘Kelly Green Flieger’ Suit Style watch under reference SRPJ89K1 opts for a vivid sunray-finished green dial with mint green Lumibrite, silvered hardware and white printed numerals. This model is also completed by a calfskin leather strap, this one a warmer, chocolate brown colour.
The layouts of both Seiko 5 Sports Flieger Suit Style watches are exactly like last year’s additions. The hour and minute hands are large and pipette-shaped hands while the seconds is left slender with a luminous counterweight. The dial’s also feature luminous dots around the circumference for every ten minute interval, a 60 minute track on the outer circumference and a 12 hour scale on the inner flange. There’s also the promised day and date window at 3 o’clock. Powering the Seiko 5 Sports Flieger Suit Style watches is the 4R35 automatic winding movement. It delivers a power reserve of 41 hours, a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and a total of 24 jewels.
