Bremont Airco Mach I Jet Watch Review

The Bremont Airco Mach has been one of the lesser discussed collections from the British watch manufacturer over recent years, and yet these classically-styled three-hand pilot’s watches deserve much more attention. Thankfully, as part of their Townhouse 2022 event, Bremont has brought the series back into the spotlight with the release of the Bremont Airco Mach I Jet watch.

Bremont was founded back in 2002 with the intention that, first and foremost, they would create luxury watches with aviation heritage at their core. As a result, one of the first offerings from the Henley-on-Thames brand was a three-model line up of pilots chronographs which was shortly followed by several aircraft-inspired models like the Spitfire EP120 and Mustang P51 limited editions. There is also of course the popular Bremont MB watch collection which has been designed in collaboration with U.K. ejection seat manufacturer Martin-Baker and the legendary Bremont Supermarine series which combines diving functionality with legibility deserving of the cockpit. More recently launched however was the Bremont Airco watch collection, which in 2017 celebrated the history of aviation watches, taking its name from one of the earliest British Military Aircraft manufacturers ‘The Aircraft Manufacturing Company Limited’.

The Bremont Airco watch collection began with the suitably named Airco Mach I which perfectly embodied the aesthetic of a World War II pilots watch with a black military dial, bold white Arabic numerals and a sturdy steel case. Following its lead came the Airco Mach II with the same 40mm steel architecture but a refreshing white dial and the Airco Mach III designed in commemoration of 100 years of British military aviation with a signature military RAF blue on the dial. Taking us back to the original is the new Bremont Airco Mach I Jet watch which delivers a refreshing take on its vintage-inspired predecessor with a black DLC coated case.

Bremont Co-Founder Giles English comments, “The DLC treatment on the Airco Jet gives a modern twist on an aviation classic. Whilst the model itself harks back to pilot’s watches of old, the Airco Jet feels fresh and brings something quite different to the range. True to the original Airco design, this new addition remains simple, incredibly wearable at 40mm, highly legible, and it brings together aviation and horology in a piece that will undoubtedly continue to stand the test of time.”

The Bremont Airco Mach I Jet watch delivers everything we expect from a watch finished in the brand’s “Jet” colour palette. The 40mm case is treated to a black DLC coating while the dial is also finished in pure black. Beneath the DLC coating of the case is classic stainless steel and the overall architecture remains engineered using the brand’s famous Trip-Tick case construction. At 40mm in diameter and 12mm height, we’re also welcomed to a 100m water resistant rating, screw down crown, unadorned fixed bezel and a steel case back manufactured with integrated flat sapphire crystal for a view of the mechanical movement within.

As for the black metal dial of the Bremont Airco Mach I Jet watch, that is also protected by sapphire crystal glass and delivers undeniable legibility thanks to large printed Arabic numerals and nickel plated hour and minute hands infilled with green-emission Superluminova. There’s also a simple seconds hand contrasting to the black backdrop with a red tip and a date window placed at the 3 o’clock position. Powering these complications is the Calibre BE-92AV, a chronometer-certified automatic winding movement with a power reserve of 38 hours and a frequency of 28,800vph.

A nice touch to complete the Bremont Airco Mach I Jet watch is its strap, which is crafted from sailcloth and dyed in a military-inspired khaki green colour. The strap secures to the wrist by a suitable black DLC coated stainless steel pin buckle. The Bremont Airco Mach I Jet is not a limited edition and retails at £3,395.
