Breitling Top Time B01 Triumph Watch Review

Breitling launches a second version of their Top Time Triumph watch, this time running the icy-blue ‘Zorro’ dial off their in-house Calibre B01 movement with a 70-hour power reserve. Unlike before, the new Breitling Top Time B01 Triumph watch also presents the movement through an exhibition case back.

Just last year, Breitling announced a new partnership with British motorcycle manufacturer Triumph. Together the launched the inaugural Breitling Top Time Triumph watch and 270 co-branded motorcycles named the Speed Twin Breitling Limited Edition. The pastel blue finish found on the bike also featured on the dial of the watch. The icy blue hue took inspiration from two past designs in both brands’ history, a blue Triumph Thunderbird 6T from 1951 and a historic blue-dialled Breitling Top Time Ref. 815 from the 1970s. A well known feature of many of the Breitling Top Time watches of this time was also the sector dial, otherwise nicknamed the “Zorro” dial for its unique bowtie motif. The original and the new Breitling Top Time B01 Triumph watch upholds this decoration with the pastel blue alternating between vertical and horizontal brushed finishes.

The main novelty of the new Breitling Top Time B01 Triumph watch is the movement. Previously, the Triumph model was powered by the Breitling Calibre 23 which offered a healthy 48 hour power reserve. Trumping that rather significantly is the Calibre B01 automatic winding movement. Alongside 47 jewels and a frequency of 28,800vph, it offers an extended power reserve of 70 hours. We’re still provided with chronometer certification, central hands for the hours, minutes and chronograph seconds and two “squircle” chronograph counters in black for the small seconds and 30 minutes. For the first time, the Breitling Top Time B01 Triumph watch delivers a sapphire crystal glass case back so you can admire the movement for yourself when the timepiece is off your wrist.

The rest of the Breitling Top Time B01 Triumph watch honours the specifications of its predecessor. The case is crafted from polished stainless steel and set with a fixed, smooth bezel, oversized mushroom chronograph pushers and a knurled, non-screw locked crown. It sits at 41mm wide and 14.27mm tall, offers a 30 metre water resistant rating and protects the dial using convex sapphire crystal glass with glareproof treatment on both sides. You can order the design on a choice of two straps; a black perforated calfskin leather strap or a mesh-style stainless steel bracelet.

As mentioned, the dial of the Breitling Top Time B01 Triumph watch maintains the same icy blue finish as before and salutes a historic Breitling Top Time watch with a distinctive bowtie effect. The dial is vertically brushed between the 10:30 and 1:30 positions and again at the 4:30 and 7:30 positions which contrasts to the horizontally brushed surfaces on the east and west sides of the display. The black counters are slightly recessed and pair with a black tachymeter scale placed around the dial’s circumference. There’s also the Breitling logo at 12 o’clock, the Triumph logo at 6 o’clock and slender central hands for the hours and minutes coated in glow in the dark Superluminova.
