Breitling Top Time Triumph Watch Review

Breitling have always had a vast arsenal of tools to rely on in the creation of their luxury watches but none more so than their uniquely coloured dial designs. We’ve seen stunning forest green dials on their Premier Bentley line, rich reds on the recently launched IRONMAN watch and rare copper, mint-green and pastel pink dials on their Chronomat. Today, their palette expands once more with the launch of the Breitling Top Time Triumph watch which reveals an unmissable icy blue centrepiece.

The new Breitling Top Time Triumph watch oozes retro spirit, more specifically, the “café racers” of the 1960’s. The stylish aesthetic has been created in collaboration with Triumph, a British motorcycle manufacturer who in line with the release of the watch have created 270 co-branded motorcycles named the Speed Twin Breitling Limited Edition. The same icy blue finish found on the bike also features on the dial of the Breitling Top Time Triumph watch, a colour which was chosen for more than just its stunning looks. Instead, the shade takes inspiration from two references in both brand’s history, a blue Triumph Thunderbird 6T from 1951 and a historic blue-dialled Breitling Top Time Ref. 815 from the 1970s.

“Triumph’s heritage and modern-retro aesthetic are just two of the many things we have in common,” said Georges Kern, CEO of Breitling. “Their blending of tradition with technology is completely in sync with what we do.”

The cold blue centrepiece is applied to Breitling’s legendary “Zorro” sector dial, a fan favourite with collectors. The Top Time was first introduced by Willy Breitling in 1960 attracting the wrists of young and active professionals looking for modern and sporty chronographs. One of these was ref. 2003 which showcased the iconic “Zorro” dial with triangular shaped bands which frame the chronograph counters bringing to mind Zorro’s half-face mask. In 2020, Breitling revived the Top Time nameplate and released an interpretation of this watch with a striking black, white and red colourway. Now, the visual is treated to an icy blue colour with alternating vertical and horizontal brushed finishes for a dramatic look.

The dial of the Breitling Top Time Triumph watch continues to demand attention with contrasting matte black chronograph counters with the line’s signature recessed rounded-square shape as well as a matching black and white printed tachymeter scale and black graphic indexes. The dial also presents the Breitling logo at 12 o’clock, the Triumph logo at 6 o’clock and slender central hands for the hours and minutes coated in glow in the dark Superluminova.

As for the case of the Breitling Top Time Triumph watch, you’ll find the familiar 41mm stainless steel architecture of previous Top Time models including oversized mushroom pushers for the easy stop-start and reset of the chronograph complication and convex sapphire crystal glass with glareproof treatment on both sides. The case sits at 14.27mm high and offers a 30 metre water resistant rating, non-screw locked crown and a snapped stainless steel case back. The case back is engraved with a detailed design sketch of Triumph’s parallel twin engine.

“This collaboration is born out of a shared philosophy of bold and original design. The Top Time Triumph brings that uncompromising style and craftsmanship together.” –  Triumph CEO Nick Bloor

Hidden behind the engraved case back of the Breitling Top Time Triumph watch is the Breitling Calibre 23 automatic winding movement. COSC certified to an accuracy of -4 to +6 seconds per day, the movement promises a power reserve of 48 hours and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. To secure the new Breitling Top Time Triumph watch to the wrist, the case is finalised by a black calfskin leather strap with contrasting grey stitching which matches perfectly with the leather seat of the Triumph Speed Twin Breitling Limited Edition bike.
