TAG Heuer Watches in the Movies

Unsurprisingly, TAG Heuer is no stranger to the silver screen and has been the preferred wristwear for some of cinema’s most iconic characters. From James Bond to Jason Bourne, Leonardo DiCaprio to Tom Hardy, celebrities and film stars all over have revelled in the exceptional craftsmanship, precision and beauty of TAG Heuer’s best-selling collections. Let’s take a look which celebrities have been spotted wearing TAG Heuer watches in the movies…

Le Mans (1971): Steve McQueen & the TAG Heuer Monaco

We couldn’t begin a list of TAG Heuer watches in the movies without starting with the iconic TAG Heuer Monaco. One of TAG’s most significant moments in history sees a TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph strapped to Steve McQueen’s wrist as he drives a Porsche 911 in the 1971 movie Le Mans. The watch is instantly noticeable for its perfectly symmetrical square shaped case, sporty blue dial and black perforated leather strap, a design that has become synonymous with TAG Heuer’s history with the sport of motor racing. The very TAG Heuer Monaco watch strapped to Steve McQueen’s wrist is now a highly coveted piece with collectors and thankfully, the Swiss brand have released reference CAW211P.FC6356 for those searching for a near exact match.

The Bourne Trilogy (2002-2007): Matt Damon & the TAG Heuer Link

Another iconic TAG Heuer watch spotted on the silver screen is the TAG Heuer Link. First seen on the wrist of Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne in 2002 in The Bourne Identity, the Link reference he wears perfectly matches his practical fighting style with a rugged and reliable aesthetic that doesn’t draw too much attention to itself. It has been said that TAG Heuer promised Damon he could keep the discontinued watch if he played Jason Bourne again, a promise clearly kept by the Swiss watch manufacturer when the same TAG Heuer Link watch was worn in the two follow up films, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

The Living Daylights (1987): Timothy Dalton & the TAG Heuer Diver

The fifteenth entry in the James Bond series and the first to star Timothy Dalton as MI6 agent James Bond, the 1987 film The Living Daylights had long puzzled watch enthusiasts as none could identify the watch on Bond’s wrist. On its release, movie goers could pinpoint the watch to have a green, almost luminous dial and an all-black case, however it wasn’t until 2010 and the delights of Blu-Ray that the exact model was later identified as a TAG Heuer diver watch dressed in black PVD. It’s stealthy aesthetic perfectly suits Bond’s sleek and mysterious style while its fully luminous dial hints at TAG Heuer’s own technical elegance.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013): Leonardo DiCaprio & the TAG Heuer 1000 series

What better watch to be sported by former stockbroker and multi-millionaire Jordan Belfort than a solid gold TAG Heuer dive watch? Set largely in the 1980’s, The Wolf of Wall Street sees Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio play the wall street investor who famously wears an 18 carat yellow gold TAG Heuer 1000 series watch. The piece plays a pivotal role in the film, not only catching the attention of the viewer every time Belfort points his finger at someone (which he does a lot) but he also mentions it in a famous line in the film: “Because at least as a rich man, when I have to face my problems, I turn up in the back of limo wearing a $2,000 suit and a $40,000 gold f***ing watch.”

Locke (2013): Tom Hardy & the TAG Heuer Aquaracer

In the 2013 film Locke, a British-American thriller drama starring none other than Tom Hardy, Ivan Locke, the only real face of the film, is spotted wearing an iconic TAG Heuer Aquaracer watch. The model is almost impossible to miss, ultimately because Hardy’s left arm spends most of its screen time on the steering wheel centre stage of the shot for almost the entire movie. It’s sleek black dial, black ceramic bezel and polished stainless steel case and bracelet is not dissimilar to many of the more recent TAG Heuer Aquaracer releases like reference WAY111A.BA0928 seen here.

Inception (2010): Leonardo DiCaprio & the TAG Heuer Carrera

Here’s yet another TAG Heuer watch spotted on the wrist of Leonardo DiCaprio (I mean it’s no surprise really, he was a brand ambassador for TAG Heuer for several years!). The legendary TAG Heuer Carrera makes an entrance as part of Christopher Nolan’s unmissable 2010 film Inception, a science fiction movie which see’s DiCaprio’s character Cobb practice the art of entering dreams and planting an idea in someone’s head. The TAG Heuer Carrera Automatic watch he wears is reference WV211B.BA0787, which is now sadly discontinued, but a similar design with a matching black dial, steel case and steel bracelet can be found here.
