Tutima Patria Small Second Rose Gold Watch Review

New for 2022, Glashutte-based brand Tutima launches a new solid gold version of their popular Patria watch with a rich blue dial and a small seconds complication powered by a manufacture movement. We get hands-on with Tutima Patria Small Second Rose Gold watch to find out what all the fuss is about…

In 1927, young academic jurist Ernst Kurtz founded the UROFA-UFAG with a mission to resurrect the fallen Glashutte watchmaking industry following the economic crisis of WWI. The company began its history creating high-quality pocket watches before eventually beginning the manufacture of wristwatches. The highest grade of the latter would receive the moniker Tutima, taking its name from the Latin adjective “tutus” which translates to “safe” or “protected”. Tutima originally focused on the creation of pilots chronographs characterised by large crowns and pushers and Swiss made components. Over the year’s their aviation heritage has remained at the centre of their DNA and today’s line-up still wonderfully revives elements of their past while delivering a look worthy of a contemporary Glashutte brand.

One of Tutima’s most exclusive and premium watch collections is the Patria, a series of beautiful gold watches praising the virtuosity of Glashutte’s watchmakers. Joining the family is the new Tutima Patria Small Second watch with a stunning 18ct rose gold case and a contrasting blue display at the centre. This combination is a real treat, giving it a pure dress watch finish that isn’t repetitive or overly conservative. It’s luxury watch that will get noticed, that’s for sure.

The 18ct rose gold case of the Tutima Patria Small Second watch sits on the wrist at 43mm in diameter and at a height of 11.2mm, still slender enough to skim under the cuff of your shirt and yet large enough to be noticeable and legible. The case pairs with curved lugs and a statement onion-style crown at 3 o’clock protected by crown guards. The crown is not screw locked but still assures a water resistant rating of 50 metres.

Beneath domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment, the dial of the Tutima Patria Small Second Rose Gold watch offers a clean, easy to read finish helped by contrasting rose gold hands placed atop the blue backdrop. The applied indexes match the narrowness of the central hour and minute hands which add extra definition thanks to arrow-shaped pointers. At 6 o’clock, the small seconds dial is also finished in the same texture and hue of blue and adorned with a white lacquer scale and rose gold hand.

Turning the Tutima Patria Small Second watch around and you’ll be greeted to the manual winding in-house movement through the sapphire crystal case back. Named the Calibre 617, this movement powers all the Small Seconds models in Tutima’s Patria collection, upholding Glashutte’s reputation for artistic watchmaking. The finely finished movement includes a variety of fine finishing and engraving, screw-mounted gold chatons and an iridescent sunburst finish on the ratchet wheels. The skeletonized cock also allows a view of Tutima’s own oscillating system. The balance wheel armed with weighted regulating screws oscillates at a frequency of 21,600 vph and contains a Breguet hairspring with a special terminal curve. We’re also warranted a decent power reserve of 65 hours.

Completing the Tutima Patria Small Second Rose Gold watch is a handsome navy blue alligator leather strap with tone-on-tone stitching to pair with the dial. Closing the band is an 18ct rose gold pin buckle. The watch retails at £15,565 and is available to order now at Jura Watches.
