TAG Heuer Carrera X Porsche Orange Racing Watch Review

Since TAG Heuer and Porsche first combined forces in 2021, we have enjoyed a series of special edition Carrera watches, plus a rare Connected smartwatch, that beautifully tribute the power, performance and precision of the Houses. Now for 2023, the pair present another Carrera Sport Chronograph but one boldly adorned in orange inspired the colour of heat sparks made by racing cars on asphalt. Meet the TAG Heuer Carrera X Porsche Orange Racing watch

When the partnership between TAG Heuer and Porsche was announced back in 2021, it was a surprise to many that this was the first time the pair had ever officially collaborated on a timepiece. The two brands share many characteristics, and even product names with the Carrera, so it felt like the perfect marriage when they launched the first TAG Heuer Carrera Porsche Chronograph two years ago. The 2021 edition boasted a unique grey textured, asphalt-inspired dial with vivid red accents to evoke the car manufacturer’s trademark colours. A year later and this design was replicated but with a black shimmery dial and yellow inflections inspired by Porsche’s racing yellow pantone. Before today, the final instalment to the TAG Heuer X Porsche watch collection was a Connected Calibre E4 Porsche Edition smartwatch which alongside a frozen blue aesthetic delivered advanced features engineered just for Porsche car owners.

The new 2023 TAG Heuer Carrera X Porsche Orange Racing watch is much like the previous two Carrera Chronograph watches but instead adds a new colourway to its otherwise monochromatic design. The 44mm stainless steel case has a black DLC coating and is topped by bevelled and domed sapphire crystal and a fixed ceramic bezel. The bezel is engraved with a white printed tachymeter scale and the Porsche logo, the latter revealing the first show of orange. The TAG Heuer Carrera X Porsche Orange Racing watch is a sports watch after all so maintains a decent 100 metre water resistant rating thanks to a screw down black DLC steel crown at 3 o’clock lacquered in an orange ring. The crown sits beside two black piston-style chronograph pushers.

It’s on the dial of the TAG Heuer Carrera X Porsche Orange Racing Special Edition where most of the fiery orange hue is presented. The black dial’s vertically brushed finishing is designed to recall racetrack marks on the asphalt while the orange accents evoke the heat sparks left behind by the cars. Orange appears just enough on the display, without feeling too heavily done, presenting itself on the three subsidiary counters, both outlining their circumferences and on the hands, and on the chronograph seconds hand. The entire dial itself is also bordered in an orange ring, separating the white printed minutes scale from the large Superluminova Arabic numerals. Like previous editions, the numerals here are done in the same typeface as those seen on Porsche car dashboards and match the hour and minute hands with Superluminova inserts.

The subsidiary dials retain their familiar 3-6-9 arrangement with the 30 minute chronograph totaliser at 3 o’clock, the small seconds at 6 o’clock and the hour chronograph counter at 9 o’clock. The two chronograph counters are textured in a gorgeous azure while the running seconds is black grained. There’s also the subtle integration of a date window into the seconds counter at 6 o’clock sitting parallel to the TAG Heuer Carrera logo up top. Eagle eyed readers may have spotted that TAG Heuer have left out the lettering originally seen at the bottom end of the 2022 TAG Heuer X Porsche Edition’s dial which displayed the Calibre 02 movement and power reserve capability. It’s a good decision allowing the dial to be a little less busy.

Turning the TAG Heuer Carrera X Porsche Orange Racing watch over and you can admire even more orange decoration on the in-house Calibre 02 movement within. The black coated rotor, which is cleverly shaped like a Porsche steering wheel, is adorned with orange lettering for the TAG Heuer and Porsche logo. Part of the column wheel mechanism is also orange. As always, the Heuer 02 automatic winding movement impresses with a weekend-proof 80 hour power reserve, 33 jewels and a frequency of 28,800vph. Lastly, the TAG Heuer Carrera X Porsche Orange Racing Special Edition is completed by a soft-touch black calfskin leather strap with orange stitching and lining modelled after a Porsche car’s upholstery. The strap secures to the wrist by a black DLC coated stainless steel folding clasp with double safety push buttons.

The TAG Heuer Carrera X Porsche Orange Racing watch is not limited to a set number of pieces but is marked as a special edition so it will only in production for so long. How long is anyone’s guess.
