Sinn U1 S Mother of Pearl Limited Edition Watch Review

If you’re a dive watch aficionado, then you’ll already be familiar with the Sinn U1. It is one of the German watchmaker’s signature underwater instruments alongside the well-known U-50, which is ultimately a smaller version of the U1, and the newly released Sinn T50 which swaps out German Submarine Steel for a titanium case. All of these designs are utilitarian and contemporary in their execution, a no-nonsense instrument capable of almost anything. Then there’s the new Sinn U1 S Mother of Pearl watch, a limited edition of 300 pieces offering all the same robust capabilities as before but presenting a touch of glamour with its iridescent dial.

As with all of Sinn’s diving watches, the new Sinn U1 S Mother of Pearl Limited Edition is jam packed with many of Sinn’s ground-breaking technologies. For starters, like all Sinn U1 watches, the case is engineered from high-strength German Submarine Steel which is both extremely resistant to sea water and highly non-magnetic. The case is then fully layered in a black-hard coated on a TEGIMENT technology basis for increased scratch resistance and a contemporary look. The case sits fairly large on the wrist at 44mm in diameter with a thickness of 14.7mm. There’s also a lug width of 22mm and according to the German brand, the Sinn U1 S Mother of Pearl weights in at 113 grams without the strap.

Placed on top of the Sinn U1 S Mother of Pearl Limited Edition’s case is Sinn’s captive diver’s bezel with minute ratcheting. This means the bezel has a captive connection to the case so any impacts are absorbed. The bezel has unidirectional rotating capability and is fitted with a matching black insert adorned in a 60 minute diver’s scale, an essential tool for real-life diver’s needing to monitor their time underwater. The screw in crown is placed purposefully at 4 o’clock to prevent pressure on the back of the hand when manipulating the movement within and the case back is kept closed and screwed down to help ensure its 1,000 metre water resistant rating. Sinn test all their dive watches on European diving equipment standards and have them certified by DNV for outstanding reliability.

It is beneath the sapphire crystal glass where the novelty of the new Sinn U1 S Mother of Pearl watch appears. The shimmering mother of pearl dial contrasts drastically to the masculine black coated case and yet despite feeling like two totally different aesthetics, they look beautiful together. The iridescent dial reveals inflections of silver, purple, blue and green which again provide a stark contrast to the black box-shaped hour markers and strong black rectangle hands. All of this hardware, the markers and hour, minutes, and seconds hands, are coated in luminescent material that glows elegantly in the dark. A date window is also placed at the 3 o’clock position.

Powering the Sinn U1 S Mother of Pearl Limited Edition is the ubiquitous SW 200-1 movement, an automatic winding movement with a 38 hour power reserve, a frequency of 28,800vph and 26 jewels. The watch is completed several strap choices, some of our personal favourites being the classic black rubber strap, the black textile strap and the three-row link German Submarine Steel bracelet which like the case is treated to a black hard coating on a TEGIMENT basis.
