Maurice Lacroix Aikon Sprint Chronograph Watch Review

For their Geneva Watch Days 2021 releases, Maurice focused entirely on their flagship collection, the Aikon, their best-seller with a heritage that expands more than thirty years. Today, the legendary integrated case, six-arm bezel and embossed dial continues to make history as it arrives, for the very first time, with a black DLC coated case together with chronograph complication. Let’s take a look at the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Sprint Chronograph

Case

We’re not sure where the name “Sprint” comes from, but we can only assume it’s a reference to the sporty adaptation of the otherwise sophisticated Aikon Chronograph. This “sportiness” comes largely from the 44 millimetre case which for the first time in Aikon Chronograph history is delivered in black DLC coated stainless steel. For those unaware, coatings like this not only offer a nice aesthetic touch but deliver additional robustness and chemical resistance. The same black DLC coating is found on the bezel but in contrast, the classic six arms are polished in gunmetal grey.

The case of the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Sprint Chronograph continues to maintain all the characteristics of its predecessors with a knurled crown at 3 o’clock, two hexagonal chronograph pushers and an exhibition case back engineered from sapphire crystal glass and a black DLC edge. Sapphire crystal glass also maintains protection and legibility of the dial alongside a coating of anti-reflective treatment. The watch is also water resistant to 200 metres so its sporty demeanour is easily applicable to shallow waters.

Dial

To match the stealthy finish of the case, the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Sprint Chronograph watch is presented with a dark gunmetal grey dial embossed with the familiar square pattern already seen on fellow Aikon models. In contrast is an entirely new colourway to the Aikon line with elements of pastel blue working their way across the small seconds dial, minutes track and central chronograph seconds hand. The rest of the hardware is finished in gunmetal grey including the faceted hour and minutes hands lined in Superluminova. Adding depth is the addition of black chronograph counters at 6 and 12 o’clock, both with a metallic, snailed finish, and a double day and date window at 3 o’clock also finished in black.

Movement

Ticking away inside the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Sprint Chronograph is the automatic winding ML112 calibre based on the Sellita SW500. It’s nothing new to the Aikon Chronograph collection but continues to provide reliable timekeeping of the central hands for hours, minutes and chronograph seconds, small seconds subsidiary dial, 30 minutes and 12 hours counters and day and date window. The Swiss made movement also has 25 jewels, beats at 28,800vph and promises a 48-hour power reserve. When the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Sprint watch is off your wrist, you can admire some of the classic decorations through the case back including circular graining and a Côtes de Genève striped oscillating rotor.

Strap

Like the pastel blue elements on the dial, the strap breaks up what would otherwise be an entirely all-black watch with a charming light blue finish. The strap is engineered from FKM rubber and is secured by a black DLC pin buckle. Like all Aikon watches, the strap of the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Sprint Chronograph is also decorated with the brand’s  ‘M’ logo, matching the rest of the aesthetic with a polished black coating.
