Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Nino Farina Limited Edition Watch Review

Havana-based luxury watch brand Cuervo y Sobrinos has launched a new limited edition in honour of the world’s first official Formula One World Champion, Emilio Giuseppe “Nino” Farina. The Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Nino Farina watch is limited to just 50 pieces and features a novelty pastel blue and brown dial.

Nino Farina was born in Turin on October 30, 1906, to a family of coachbuilders. It was clear from an early age that he would be involved in the automotive world when at just nine years old, he drove a small car on the grounds of his father’s factory. With a whetted appetite for motor racing, Nino joined his uncle as a passenger in his first race at 16 and three years later, competed in his first solo competition. As well as being capable driver, Nino Farina had many athletic and academic achievements, receiving a doctorate in law at the University of Turin and becoming a talented runner. Despite this, he was still driven by his love of racing and during the 1930’s, he was recruited to drive for the Scuderia Ferrari Alfa Romeo team and by 1938, he won enough races to become Italian champion. A few years later, Nino was awarded his crowning achievement when he won the first official Formula 1 World Championship in 1950.

Bringing the spirit of Nina Farina to life, Cuervo y Sobrinos has revealed the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Nino Farina Limited Edition watch with its own flamboyant Historiador case. The architecture is inspired by Cuervo y Sobrinos watches from the past, boasting large, deeply angled lugs, piston-style chronograph pushers and a prominent 3 o’clock crown with an unusual crown protector. The case is crafted from polished stainless steel and measures to 42mm in diameter with a 12mm height. The bezel is fixed and left bare and sits beside double domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment. Turning the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Nino Farina watch over continues the collaboration with Nino’s signature printed on the exhibition glass.

The most distinguishing feature of the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Nino Farina Limited Edition is its dial, beautifully coloured in a light blue hue and dressed in chocolate brown accents. Around the outer edge is a sloped flange for the tachymeter scale in blue to pair with the sunray brushed centre while the telemeter scale and two counters are finished in brown. The small seconds sits at 3 o’clock while the 30 minutes chronograph counter is placed at 9 o’clock. The dial also presents large cream-coloured Arabic numerals, Superluminova leaf-shaped hands for the hours and minutes and a bright red central chronograph seconds hand.

Driving the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Nino Farina watch is the automatic winding CyS 8099 movement. It is based on the Valjoux 7753 cam-operated chronograph and runs at a frequency of 28,800vph and offers a solid 48 hour power reserve. As mentioned, you can see the movement through the watch’s exhibition case back including the CyS decorated oscillating rotor. Completing the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Nino Farina Limited Edition is a brown ‘racing style’ matte leather strap that features numerous perforations, a detail inspired by racing gloves from the past.
