Bell & Ross BR 03 94 Multimeter Watch Review

The chronograph is by far one of the most popular and versatile complications. Ultimately a wrist-based stopwatch, they are generally used to track elapsed time on the fly, usually time, speed or distance. Paris-based watch manufacturer Bell & Ross is certainly no outsider to using the function, having combined their many of their circle-within-a-square pilot’s references with the chronograph complication. However, for their latest release, the brand step away from its traditional no-nonsense, military-inspired styling and deliver a boldly modern piece with a multi-scale chronograph full of colour and with a focus on fitness. Meet the new limited edition Bell & Ross BR 03 94 Multimeter watch…

It would be wrong to start anywhere but the dial on the new Bell & Ross BR 03 94 Multimeter Limited Edition. The bright and graphic centrepiece delivers a wealth of useful information designed especially for athletes, a target audience Bell & Ross rarely puts their sights on. The Bell & Ross dial is typically clean and precise with large Arabic numerals and luminous hands. While still easily legible, the dial of the Bell & Ross BR 03 94 Multimeter watch is certainly more lively and yet despite the plethora of data on there, the Swiss manufacturer have made it effortless to translate with each chronograph scale defined by its own colour.

Working our way from the outside in, the bright orange scale is a pulsometer scale which is used for the quick and accurate measuring of your heart rate. Then the muted mint green ring displays an asthmometer scale, a considerably rare scale on a chronograph, which tracks your breathing rate. The middle track is decorated in white and delivers the classic tachymeter scale which you’ll have spotted on several sports chronographs in the past, largely used for timing motorsport events. The final two tracks in yellow and beige are also tachymeters, but these are calibrated specifically with cyclists and runners in mind.

While the right hand side of the dial separates the different scales with contrasting colours, the left hand side of the Bell & Ross BR 03 94 Multimeter presents a chart explaining each of the five chronograph scales and their recommended timing lengths. As for the timing, the subsidiary dials are less than traditional with only half the scales printed at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions to make room for the coloured rings and set with double-ended hands in orange and white to compensate. The dial also features three white central hands for the hours, minutes and chronograph seconds and a round cut out date aperture between the 12 and 1 o’clock markers.

The case of the Bell & Ross BR 03 94 Multimeter Limited Edition maintains all the personality of the rest of the BR 03 94 line with a 42 millimetre square-shaped diameter finished in matte black ceramic. On top, the fixed chamfered bezel borders the dial secured by four prominent screws. There’s also a screw down crown, solid case back, sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating and a water resistance of 100 metres.

Fuelling the Bell & Ross BR 03-94 Multimeter watch is the BR-CAL.301 automatic chronograph movement which takes its base from the ETA 2894-2. The movement is nothing new for Bell & Ross and offers a standard 42 hour power reserve, 37 jewels and a frequency of 28,800vph. Completing the watch is a perforated black rubber strap secured by a black PVD coated stainless steel pin buckle. An additional strap is also available, this one engineered from ultra-resilient black textile.
