The Baume et Mercier Baume watch collection expands its selection of contemporary and youthful designs with a new complication: the moonphase. Bringing the covered lunar cycle centre stage decorated with a backdrop of stars, the new Baume Moonphase watches are the latest timepieces under our review.
In 2018, Switzerland-based luxury goods manufacturer Richemont launched the Baume brand and with it a series of sustainable Baume watches. Committed to an environmentally friendly approach, Baume watches refuse the use of precious metals, stones or animal fabrics and instead opt for upcycled and recycled materials. Their green way of thinking was a refreshing and necessary proposal for the luxury watch making world and two years after its launch, Baume was combined with the similarly named, Richemont-owned brand, Baume et Mercier. The Baume et Mercier Baume collection started as a family of time-and-date models before welcoming two Baume Ocean limited editions. Now, the same characteristic 12 o’clock crown, interchangeable straps and wired embrace a new movement and dial design in the Baume et Mercier Baume Moonphase watches.
There are currently three Baume Moonphase novelties to choose from, two 35 millimetre models and one larger 42 millimetre piece. Each differs in its case, strap and dial colourway but unite through their central moonphase indicator. At the centre, a starry sky in white or blue is the backdrop to two moons with the one at 12 o’clock remaining in a permanent full-moon state while the aperture at 6 o’clock displays the current lunar cycle as you’d see it from your bedroom window at night. The complication is powered by nothing overly exciting, just the Swiss made Ronda 708 quartz movement, a calibre the Swiss watch brand uses in several of their Promesse Moonphase watches.
The 42 millimetre variant of the Baume et Mercier Baume Moonphase watch under reference 10637 brings to life its resolutely modern round case through polished stainless steel which uniquely contrasts to the black PVD wired lugs and knurled pocket watch-styled crown at 12 o’clock. For the dial, the timepiece chooses blue lacquer with a matching blue and white star-studded moon phase disc and rhodium-plated baton-shaped hands. The strap matches perfectly, engineered from blue cotton with blue stitching and cream button accents on the back. As all other Baume timepieces, the strap features an interchangeable system so you can easily swap the band around with any other compatible Baume strap.
To compliment the 42 millimetre model, the collection makes room for two smaller 39 millimetre Baume Moonphase watches. The first under reference 10638 delivers the very same strap and dial design as its larger counterpart with a blue cotton band and sun-satin finished blue lacquered centre but instead opts for a 5N yellow gold PVD case with matching coloured lugs, crown and hands. Meanwhile reference 10639 elects a sharp white aesthetic concocted from a polished stainless steel case and a white matte dial. At the centre of the dial, the moonphase display also opts for a white finish, flipping the conventional colours with the sky in white and the stars in black. The colours of the moons are also reversed in an identical fashion.
All three Baume et Mercier Baume Moonphase watches complete their sustainable profiles with scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass treated with anti-reflective coating, an 8.1 millimetre case thickness and a closed case back classically engraved with the Baume emblem. The cases also promise a water resistant rating of 30 metres and each strap secures to the wrist by a pin buckle engineered from their retrospective case materials.
