Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical Bronze Watch Review

Swiss watch manufacturer Hamilton extends its popular military-inspired Khaki Field watch collection with a new patina-developing addition. Measuring to 38mm, encased in bronze and boasting a matte black dial, meet the new Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical Bronze watch.

One of the several Switzerland-based names under the umbrella of the Swatch Group, Hamilton remains a firm favourite with collectors, particularly those with a taste for vintage-inspired watches. Their Khaki Field collection reinforced this further on its launch in 2018. Its design commemorated a mid-20th-century watch named the Hamilton “Hacked”, a rare but significant British field watch that had the capacity to make the seconds hand stop when the crown was pulled. This enabled military personnel to synchronise their watches. Eventually, the feature became mandatory in almost all modern-day timepieces. For the Hamilton Khaki Field, the familiar aesthetics of the “Hacked” was reissued, with the new designs proudly bringing back the same proportions, dial design and colourways.

The original 2018 edition of the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical was shown plenty of love, but it wasn’t long before the luxury watch brand extended the series further to include a more powerful movement and new dial and strap colourways such as bold white dials, khaki green straps and distressed leather bands. The family has also seen several editions with unique PVD coated cases in brown or black, a design choice wonderfully complementing of their military heritage. For 2021, Hamilton returns with yet another addition to the Hamilton Khaki Field collection, this time presenting its very first bronze case. Let’s take a look at the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical Bronze watch.

There’s no denying bronze has become somewhat of an unstoppable trend in the luxury watch world over the past couple of years and its unique patina-developing properties shows no sign of decreasing in popularity. For us, it is the perfect case material for vintage-inspired watches like the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical Bronze, which is engineered almost entirely from bronze, other than the case back, using CuSn8 alloy (92% bronze and 8% tin). The 38mm bronze case offers a variety of unique features including a warm, pre-worn colour and a textured patina that will naturally develop overtime. As such, each Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical Bronze watch will look entirely different to the rest and tells something of a story of its wearer and it’s time on the wrist – just like that of real military field watches.

To rest of the case’s design follows suit to previous Hamilton Khaki Field watches with wide-set lugs, a smooth unadorned bezel and a large knurled crown. The 50 metre water resistant case back is also engineered from titanium, so the reaction of bronze doesn’t occur directly against your skin. The Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical Bronze watch continues its military legacy with a highly legible black matte dial detailed with ultra-legible 24-hour markings, bronze-tone hands and triangular shaped indexes. Each of these markings are decorated in glow in the dark Superluminova for instantly legibility. Complimenting the bronzed hardware on the dial is a leather NATO strap in distressed brown leather closed by a titanium pin-buckle.

Hidden inside the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical Bronze watch is the manual-winding Hamilton H-50 automatic winding movement. Considered one of the Swiss manufacturer’s better-known calibres, it takes its architecture from the ETA 2801 and beats it with an impressive 80 hour power reserve. It also has 17 jewels, a 21,600 frequency rate and powers the classic central hands for hours, minutes and seconds.
