Grand Seiko Heritage 60th Anniversary SBGP007 Limited Edition Review

We’ve been excited to see what Grand Seiko will do in 2020 for a while now, knowing that alongside their 60th anniversary will come a stunning selection of new limited edition models. One of the first to be announced is this remarkable Grand Seiko Heritage 60th Anniversary SBGP007 Limited Edition, a three-hand timepiece making use of a brand new Grand Seiko quartz calibre, the Caliber 9F85. The Japanese movement boasts some incredible new technologies including a legendary accuracy of ±5 seconds a year.

The history of Grand Seiko first started in the late 1950’s when a small team of Seiko’s finest watchmakers came together to create ‘the world’s best watch’, a watch that succeeded all others in its precision, functionality, durability and beauty. In December 1960, the first Grand Seiko watch was released, and its levels of accuracy were equivalent if not superior to the grade of the highly recognised chronometer standard of the time.

With 2020 marking the 60th birthday of Grand Seiko, the brand were undoubtedly going to come out with something special. The number 60 is not only a fundamental number in the world of horology, but it also has significant importance in Japan symbolising new energy and re-birth. With this in mind, Grand Seiko have created the new Caliber 9F85 quartz movement as part of their celebrations. It comes equipped with a time difference adjustment function that allows the hour hand to be adjusted without the need to stop the seconds hand. This ensures its high precision is preserved when the wearer needs to change time zones. The Grand Seiko Heritage 60th Anniversary SBGP007 Limited Edition watch also has a version of the Calibre 9F86 which has been specially adjusted to a level of accuracy of ±5 seconds a year.

Decorated in the brand’s signature blue colour, the dial of the Grand Seiko Heritage 60th Anniversary SBGP007 watch is adorned with a unique 2020 pattern to commemorate the special year. The faceted hour and minute hands, bright red seconds hand and date window at 3 o clock are all powered by the high precision quartz movement while the gold 5-pointed star at 6 o clock is there to symbolise the calibre’s extraordinary accuracy rate of + 5 to – 5 seconds a year. The dial is also housed beneath high-definition scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass coated with anti-reflective treatment.

In typical Grand Seiko style, the 40mm stainless steel case is designed with modern execution. Its thin bezel allows the dial to be wider and clearer while the cases sharp curves and sleek lugs reflect light beautifully. Turn the Grand Seiko Heritage 60th Anniversary SBGP007 Limited Edition around and see the screw case back adorned with a stunning 18 carat yellow gold decoration. The coin is marked by the legendary Grand Seiko lion to symbolise the ambition of the Grand Seiko team and their goal to become the “king of watches”. Alongside this is a special limited edition engraving and the unique limited edition number out of 2,500 pieces.

The Grand Seiko Heritage 60th Anniversary SBGP007 Limited Edition watch is expected to be released in March 2020 at an estimated retail price of €3,900 (£3,300). You can pre-order your own at Jura Watches today to become one of the first to take delivery of this highly collectable limited edition.
