Seiko Prospex LX Antarctica Divers Limited Edition Review

Inspired by a mysterious underwater forest in Antarctica, the new Seiko Prospex LX Antarctica Divers SNR045J1 Limited Edition encompasses everything we love about the Seiko brand. From their admiration for the ocean to their remarkable technical prowess that allows them to venture deeper than most, Seiko have bought to life the beauty of the sea with a detailed green bezel and matching dial powered by one of their legendary Spring Drive movements.

The Seiko Prospex LX Antarctica Divers Limited Edition is part of the brand’s LX series, a collection only debuted last year but one that has proved highly successful for its sports-luxury aesthetic. The line takes its name from the Latin word “lux” which translates to “light”, a notion reflected in the watch’s ability to shine a presence upon its wearer through a high aesthetic sense, practicability and precision. The Seiko Prospex LX collection is also inspired by a historic Seiko sports watch first released back in 1968. The Seiko Professional Diver was famed for its robust construction, high functionality and exceptional precision, three key values that are found within the new limited edition of 500 pieces.

The mesmerising shade of green found on the dial and ceramic bezel of the Seiko Prospex LX Antarctica Divers SNR045J1 is inspired wholly by the Antarctic Skarvsnes region and the enchanting moss pillars found beneath the waves. The Skarvsnes Foreland is less than 35 miles from the brand’s Japanese Showa research station in Antarctica where a team of Seiko’s researchers test a variety of their dive releases in the water to ensure the movements and case designs can withstand the harsh environments. During a test, the team discovered a “mysterious underwater forest of moss pillars covering the bottom of a nearby lake”, a discovery that led to their latest limited edition.

Engineered as a saturation diving watch superior in all elements, the Seiko Prospex LX Antarctica Divers SNR045J1 showcases a lightweight 44.8mm titanium case finished with the brand’s iconic Zaratsu polishing and fitted with a screw down case back and screw in crown to ensure a water resistant rating of 300 metres. The stunning green bezel is unidirectional with ratcheted detailing for easy use even with thick diving gloves on and decorated with a 60 minute scale ideal for counting down dive times. For optimal legibility even in the darkest depths of the ocean, the Seiko Prospex LX Antarctica Divers Limited Edition boasts glow in the dark Lumibrite on the hands, indexes and bezel and anti-reflective treatment on the curved sapphire crystal glass.

Proving its point as a luxury sports watch, the Seiko Prospex LX Antarctica Divers SNR045J1 features one of the brand’s most legendary and impressive in-house movements, the Seiko Spring Drive Calibre 5R65. With a healthy power reserve of 72 hours, 30 jewels and an accuracy of +1 second per-day and +15 seconds per month, this extraordinary piece of technology is renowned for its ability to generate energy like a conventional mechanical watch but with the superior level of precision of a quartz. The Calibre 5R65 provides central hands for hours, minutes and seconds, a date window at 3 o’clock and a distinctive power reserve indicator between the 7 and 8 indexes.

As with any of their limited editions, we have no doubt that the Seiko Prospex LX Antarctica Divers SNR045J1 watch will be a quick sell-out on its release at the end of this month.
