Measuring to 36mm in diameter and adorned in a range of colourful dials, the new TAG Heuer Carrera Date 36mm watches might just be some of our favourite unisex watches of the year so far.
As the TAG Heuer Carrera celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2023, the Swiss watchmaker has unsurprisingly launched plenty of new designs into the collection to commemorate the occasion. Many of them debuted within TAG Heuer’s Watches & Wonders showcase, including a duo of Carrera Chronograph “Glassbox” watches and a Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon. Ultimately, the majority of the designs featured chronograph function which is typical for the Carrera family. The originally Carrera watch launched in 1963 by Jack Heuer was a chronograph, measuring to 36mm in diameter – a perfect case size for men of the era. It wasn’t until the late 1990’s however, that the Carrera was launched with a simple chronograph-free dial. There’s been only a handful ever since, but hopefully TAG Heuer may just be changing that with the launch of the new Carrera Date 36mm watches.
Just like the original Carrera Chronograph launched in 1963, the new TAG Heuer Carrera Date 36mm watches boast stainless steel, 36mm wide cases. It’s a case size many have been more of recently, and that goes for both men and women. Alongside the easy-to-wear diameter, the cases are redesigned with a new height of only 10mm –that’s a whole 2mm slimmer than previous 36mm Carrera models. The lug-to-lug width also drops just shy of 42mm and the end links have a new tapered shape that make these watches more effortless to wear than ever.
The TAG Heuer Carrera Date 36mm watches still retain their brightly polished fixed bezel, domed and bevelled sapphire crystal glass with double anti-reflective treatment and a non-screw locked crown at 3 o’clock engraved with the Swiss watchmaker’s familiar shield logo. The cases are polished and brushed and offer a 50 metre water resistant rating. They come completed by a stainless steel bracelets with H-shaped links and classic folding buckles.
The most obvious novelty of the new TAG Heuer Carrera Date 36mm watches is the selection of colourful dials available. The first three are sunray-brushed in a signature navy blue, an elegant pastel green and a warm silver. These all have gold plated hardware for the hour markers, central hands for the hours, minutes and seconds and the frame of the date window at 6 o’clock. The fourth, which easily leads the charge for summertime, is a bright pink snailed display with classic rhodium-plated hands and markers. All of the dials have white Superluminova inserts on hour and minute hands.
Powering the TAG Heuer Carrera Date 36mm watches is the Calibre 7 automatic winding movement, a surprisingly departure from the Calibre 5 movement which has previously powered Carrera Date references. The Calibre 7 movement is based off the Sellita SW300 and offers a 56 hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800vph. In typical Carrera fashion, you can enjoy the movement and its Côtes de Genève striped oscillating rotor through an exhibition case back.
