TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition 2021 Review

Commemorating Brazilian motor racing legend Ayrton Senna has become an annual tradition for luxury Swiss watch manufacturer TAG Heuer. Once again, the brand renew their commitment to the sport with another tribute: the new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition 2021 watch.

Ayrton Senna is certainly not someone with a short list of achievements. He dominated the supreme discipline of motor racing, becoming World Champion in 1988, 1989, and 1991 and winning 41 Grand Prixs and 65 pole positions, with the latter being the record until 2006. His dedication to the sport was also showcased through his partnership with TAG Heuer, for whom he became an ambassador for in 1988. Despite his passing almost thirty years ago, he still remains one of the Swiss watch brand’s largest representatives and every year, TAG Heuer commemorates the legend with a special edition watch. For 2021, that design is the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna.

One of the most significant features of the new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition 2021 watch is the embossed black leather strap. Bold and dynamic, the leather band has been specifically designed to mimic the S/EL that Senna used to wear on his TAG Heuer. The distinctive S shaped embossing was highly recognisable and has been revived in the new special edition strap, alongside bright yellow stitching and a black stainless steel clasp with double safety system push buttons.

As with all previous Senna Special Editions, the new TAG Heuer Formula Senna 2021 watch is instantly recognisable for it’s bright yellow and black colourway which pays tribute to Senna’s famous livery. Black makes its way across the entire 43 millimetre case engineered from DLC coated stainless steel which includes a black ceramic bezel accentuated with delicate lines of contrasting yellow. The bezel remains fixed and engraved with a white tachymeter scale. The scale stands out most significantly for the numeral 400, a reference to a speed that has never been reached in Formula 1 history.

The case of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition 2021 watch continues to prove itself as a rugged sports timepiece with a 200 metre water resistant rating helped by scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass, a screw in crown at 3 o’clock, large chronograph pushers dressed in black DLC and a screw down case back. To mark its special edition status, the case back is engraved with an image of the Brazilian driver’s iconic helmet and the words “SENNA SPECIAL EDITION”.

Housed beneath the sapphire crystal, the dial maintains the familiar yellow and black attire with a dark grey anthracite backdrop adorned with a yellow border, matching yellow counter edges and a double S signature at 6 o’clock. Within the three subsidiary dials are indicators for the 1/10 second counter, 30 minutes counter and small seconds all of which are powered by a Swiss quartz movement. The movement is also responsible for the hours, minutes and central chronograph second hand with the former two treated to a coating of Superluminova for optimal legibility.
