The partnership between TAG Heuer and Formula 1 is one that has spanned decades. It originally began when TAG Heuer initiated the brand’s first Formula 1 sponsorship agreement with Swiss racing driver Jo Siffert in 1968. Over the years, more racing drivers began wearing their own TAG Heuer watches and eventually, the name became a must-have with not only drivers but engineers and the team principle. Having already conquered the sport, TAG Heuer launched the Formula 1 collection in 1986 and rather quickly, it became one of the brand’s best-selling collections. In 2016, TAG Heuer became the official partner and timekeeper of the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team and ever since, a yearly special edition watch has been launched in honour of their partnership. Working our way from the outside in, let’s start with the case of the TAG Formula 1 Red Bull Racing Special Edition. It follows all the design codes of previous Formula 1 watches with a strong, sporty aesthetic sitting on the wrist at 43mm in diameter and is crafted from classic 316L grade stainless steel with both brushed and polished finishing. Some subtle changes to the case have been added including a new red accent stripe on the 2 o’clock chronograph pusher and changes to the tachymeter bezel.
Finished in blue aluminium, the fixed bezel still showcases the iconic toothed architecture of previous iterations, but it replaces the oversized numerals on the tachymeter scale with finer hallmarks. The TAG Formula 1 Red Bull Racing 2022 watch continues to impress with a solid 200 metre water resistance helped by a screw in crown at 3 o’clock and a solid case back cleanly engraved with the Red Bull racing logo and a chequered flag motif.
The majority of new features found on the TAG Formula 1 Red Bull Racing 2022 watch are on the dial. The bold blue, red and yellow centrepiece takes inspiration from the Red Bull Racing team’s livery with the dark blue sun-brushed dial mimicking the tones of the racing suits and the contrasting yellow and red touches bringing to life the Red Bull logo. Accents of yellow can be found on the central chronograph seconds hand as well as the counter at 6 o’clock while red makes up the entire minutes track and the hands for the 1/10th second chronograph counter and minute chronograph counter.
The large Arabic numerals that encircle the dial of the TAG Formula 1 Red Bull Racing 2022 Special Edition also reference the sport, taking the font from racing car speedometers. Connoisseurs of the sport will also notice a subtle reference in the form of a line above the 5 and 7 numerals which evoke the starting line of a Formula 1 track. As with all of TAG Heuer’s watches, the dial guarantees easy legibility with large skeletonised hands for the hours and minutes and the Arabic numerals treated to inserts of glow in the dark Superluminova.
Powering the TAG Formula 1 Red Bull Racing Special Edition is the Ronda 5040D quartz chronograph movement, a calibre we have seen several times in the TAG Heuer Formula 1 family offering an impressive level of accuracy and an affordable price point. The movement is kept housed beneath a screw down case back which secures comfortably to the wrist by a choice of two straps, the first a three-link stainless steel bracelet and the second a sporty navy blue rubber band.
