Squale Master Marina Militare Limited Edition Watch Review

Squale and the Italian Navy reignite their relationship to launch an exciting new 300-piece limited edition boasting the original Squale Master case back, a whopping 1,200 water resistance and a 120-click numberless bezel. Meet the new Squale Master Marina Militare watch

The relationship between Squale and the Italian Navy goes back to the 1980’s when the Swiss watch manufacturer became the official watch supplier to the La Spezia Scuba Diving Group. This meant that exclusive Squale watches were created permitting to the specific requirements of the Navy. Some of the models created were given the nickname Squale “Master”, which over time have become one of the brand’s most famous designs. They were worn on the wrists of free divers like Jacques Mayol and Enzo Maiorca, the former of which set his world diving record of 67 meters wearing a Squale Master watch. Reviving some of the best elements of the original Squale Master watches and combining them with even better technologies, the Italian Navy and Squale return to their professional partnership after 40 years with the release of the Squale Master Marina Militare Limited Edition.

One of the most notable features of the new Squale Master Marina Militare watch is its case which revives the historic Squale Master case back, one of the first case backs designed by Charles Von Büren in the 1960’s. The Italian Navy coat of arms is engraved at the centre and thanks to a helium escape valve and screw down technology, we’re promised a water resistance of up to 1,200 metres – that’s an additional 200 metres on the original 1,000 metre water resistant Squale Master. The case continues to impress with a full 316L stainless steel architecture entirely satin-brushed and fitted with a 4mm sapphire crystal glass. The Squale Master Marina Militare Limited Edition is certainly not a small watch, measuring in at 42mm in diameter, 17mm in height and with a lug-to-lug width of 49mm.

The smooth unadorned bezel initially entertains you into thinking the Squale Master Marina Militare watch is not a diving instrument at all. However, the lack of a 60 minute scale is purposely done, honouring its use by military diving corps who needed to monitor the hours of long dives, not the minutes. The bezel rotates unidirectionally at 120 clicks and features one inverted triangle marker at 12 o’clock. The marker is done in glow in the dark Superluminova for easy monitoring of elapsed dive times even in dark waters.

For the dial, the Squale Master Marina Militare Limited Edition ensures equivalent levels of legibility thanks to a unique “sandwich” technique that uses several layers and cut outs for the hour markers. The dial’s indices appear on a fully lumed disc which sits beneath the main black display. This allows for more BGW9 Superluminova to be concentrated in the large indices than if they were printed directly on top. The large hour and minute hands are also equipped with Superluminova inserts, the minutes hand finished in orange and the hours in brushed steel. The seconds hand features a pointed lume tip and a blacked out date window appears at 3 o’clock. Lastly, the dial of the Squale Master Marina Militare watch marks the partnership between Squale and the Italian Navy with both the luxury watch brand’s logo and the Marina Militare logo placed at 12 and 6 o’clock respectively.

Powering the Squale Master Marina Militare Limited Edition is the Sellita SW200-1 elaboré automatic winding movement. It’s a trusted and reliable workhorse, Swiss made and offers 26 jewels, a frequency of 28,800vph and a 38-hour power reserve. Completing the design is a black rubber strap tapering into a signed stainless steel pin buckle. For a different look, you’ll also receive an additional black NATO strap in the special commemorative IP67-certified packaging.
